View Full Version : How often does your Golden bark?

Bear only barks when the other dogs in the house bark, when he hears me coming to the door, when he needs to go out if I don't look at him when he looks at the door. When he's in his crate and there are people in the living room, he'll bark. Luckily he doesnt' bark that much, and when he does, he stops after a second when I tell him to stop or point the bitter spray apple towards him.

well, Cooper is only little, and the first time I have heard him bark was this morning! :) He mainly barks when he wants to play or when his doggie sis ignores him :)

Denali barks so rarely, that when he does it scares me! Not that he is mean, it is just SO unexpected! Usually he barks at my husband when they are playing...he has this really deep, gruff bark too...not what you would expect from such a sweet, loving dog!

Beau barks when he is playing, and when he wants Duke next door to come out and play. He goes to their front porch and stands at the door with this deep loud DUUUUKKKE bark. I swear sometimes he can talk. He has also learned to bark when he wants back in ;)

Blaze barks a bit too much. If he wants something he will bark (and I ignore him), if he doesn't want to stay, (I ignore him..), when he feels like it, when there is unusual activity outside (an alerting bark), and when he is bored. Also when I cue him (hehe...we have a small cue, so he can "Count")
Luna doesn't bark too much. She barks if she doesn't reconize someone, if she's scared, and in the morning until I speak to her. Then she starts 'talking' Owwwwwwh ("Out"), AwwwwwHOOHH.

Mine doesn't bark much at ALL. For the 2 yrs plus I've had him, I've only heard him bark less than 20 times, my mum only heard him bark once, and my dad has never heard him bark. My dad was kinda worried that he asked me if my dog is mute :D
He only barks if the dog he wants to play with ignore him, and it's only 1-2 deep barks

That is amazing. Blaze has barked more than that in a minute. (Record is 187...he wanted me to throw the toy...and I was waiting for quite. Only after that much time was he tired enough to pause for a breath, then I clicked and tossed the toy.) *wonders what it would be like to have a quiet dog*

well.. for one thing, the 'Bowlingual' toy would be totally useless on quiet dogs ;)

Ralphie the scaredy-pup barks occasionally. Whenever he feels threatened, or sees something that looks odd to him. It's a loud, scary bark, you'd think he were a rottweiler or some other watchdog, but he's harmless. We are trying to discourage his barking. But he doesn't do it a lot.
Our dear departed Bonnie rarely barked. Almost like it was too much effort, though she was a very active dog. When she did bark, we listened. Only barked if she had to go out. It's a good thing we didn't expect Bonnie to be a watchdog, because she was not that type at all. Would have licked a burglar to death, though.

SuGaR used to bark to get our attention when she first came home with us. We taught her to use other methods instead... so she's changed to licking us to inform us that she's peed and wants us to change the newspapers on her pee tray ;)
Recently she's let out a bark once in a while when she's really excited when we play with her. That.... we let her get away with. Coz she barks so little, once in a while is kinda assuring us that she has not gone mute :D

I was very surprised when Henry started barking! My in laws have a Golden who I've heard bark MAYBE once. Henry is a talker! Mainly just when he wants to play, or when he's trying to get the cats wound up to play with him. But at least a few times a day.

Spinner barks when he wants the tennis ball or snowballs thrown (which is frequently)! I think he would play fetch all day long if we had the energy! :laugh2 :laugh2 :laugh2
Last night my husband & son were in the hot tub & they were throwing snowballs for Spin & with all the barking that I heard I was patiently awaiting the police to ring the doorbell ... disturbing the peace. :laugh2 It is a good thing that we have such nice neighbors.

Tara also barks to get us to throw the ball. She has found out if it is loud bark that is demanding she don't get it. :204

Bailey barks when he's frustrated. When he is playing too rough and we turn away or tell him no, he will bark. We ignore it and he will only bark a few more times then give up. He barks to come in and sometimes when he needs to go out.

Murphy is a good watch dog. He barks when he hears a sound outside that he doesn't recognize. We spend a lot of time outside with him, telling him what's OK and what's unusual, etc. Mostly he barks when he hears foxes in the yard at night. He woke us up the other night and we didn't hear anything but sure enough when my hubby went out the next day, there were fox tracks all over the place.
He barked at the UPS lady when my husband had him out for a walk, then he ran over and greeted her with kisses!!

Cooper only barks when something scares him. Its usually when there is a storm because he is scared of thunder. I live in San Diego so this is very rarely. When he wants to play he makes this sound. Sounds like those dogs that can actually speak some words. He sounds so cute. We try to listen carefully and see if he is actually saying anything... :)

Romeo is 12 weeks old and I have never heard him bark! I'm starting to wonder if he ever will, I guess I should count my blessings.
I know when I picked him up from the breeder all the puppies were barking so I guess he knows how, maybe he just has nothing to bark about.
The telephone repairman came to the house yesterday and I found Romeo outside playing with him, not a single bark. Yup, goldens are certainly no guard dog LOL!

02-18-2005, 12:38 PM
Snow barks non stop when she wants you to play ball. Weve tried ignoring, but I don't think she would ever stop. She has this game she made up, that she pushes her ball under the sofa or chair and she will spend about 5 minutes reaching for it and entertaining herself, then she starts barking for me to get the ball out. As soon as I do, she pushes it back under and starts all over. She likes to do this outside under the fence too. It gets alittle annoying!

Chloé will bark forever if she doesn't get what she wants. The problem is that it is never very obvious what she wants !
The others just bark if they see or hear something outside. Fortunately we don't have any neighbours, well actually we bought this rambling old place for that very reason. The last house we had was in a small hamlet and the dogs had their own terrace. Because the walls were so high, the girls could only hear passing traffic and people. They couldn't see anything. Now they have only a wire fence and can see for miles. What happy dogs ! and nothing passes for them to bark at.

Jaeger, will bark at strangers in the yard, or his perception of our yard, and if he hears a strange sound, outside, if he's inside.
Goodwin, barks, from anxiety.. When he first came to us, he barked the better part of his day. literally the majority of his awake, and not exercising, or eatin, he was barking.. mostly because he didn't want to share, anything.. if there were ten of the same thing, he wanted ten, not nine, ten. Jaeger was most tolerant, but now, has since told him, that he's not giving up, the one bone, that he has.. that goodwin can have nine, but Jaeger is gonna keep one for himself. Thankfully, he is much improved in this regard. today, was the first day, in a really long time, that I heard , "that" bark.. and it was quickly resolved, with a few words from Jaeger. He usually doesn't bark for noises, or strangers.. except, if hes' in the car, he will bark, at people that are walking. go figure.. not sure what that's all about.. I do reward him, for the quiet in the car, if he doesn't respond to walkers, cuz it really is obnoxious, to have him barking at people.

Kacey has barked maybe 10 times since we have had her since last June. Except when the garbage man drives by...That is the only thing that both her and Sadie will always bark at.
Sadie will bark only if we ask her to speak. Otherwise I rarely ever hear her bark.
Chablis
02-26-2005, 11:06 AM
Chablis barks all the time!!! If the doorbell rings(At home or on the T.V ;)) She barks. If someone comes into the house, she barks. If we pick up our rabbit and not her. She barks. If she's excited, she barks. If we're playing, she barks. If My brother and I are play fighting, she barks.
Do you get the point?
We know that it was bad to let her bark and all that, but she's 10 now. My parents had to train her while rasing a 4 and and 8 year old, too.

Our boy, Diego is a very quiet dog. He seems to only bark at the vacuum cleaner and at the cat the odd time. He often scares ME when he barks b/c I am not used to hearing him. When we run into dogs that bark, I think to myself "man, that sure is a yappy dog". :)

Ginger never barks at people, so she doesn't bark when she wants something from me (she just comes up and gives me her paw or stands in front of me...)
She does bark pretty often because she barks at the doorbell, when the mail comes, and when other dogs pass by our house-- especially this one Husky who we call her 'enemy'. He once tried to attack her when she was out with me and now she just goes nuts when he passes by the house...

chazzy only barks obnoxiously when the dogs across the street start barking first, then its a loud deep bark mixed with whines. Ive started using the squirt bottle, I rarely squirt, just say quiet and point it in his direction and hell stop. When he wants in the house he does quick hi pitched yip yip yip about 4 seconds apart. silly dog. Reggie the pup has started barking at people we pass as we go for walks, working really hard on NOT doing this! Hell bark if hes doing the "watch" in puppy class and I try to make him wait it out a bit longer. Hes telling me "Im watching you, what are u waiting for, give me a treat!"

in the late afternoon or in the evening when she wants to get Finny to play with her. It's actually adorable. She makes all these pleading sounds with Finny...like "come on, Finny...play with me...let's wrestle...oh and here, see this toy in my mouth?? I'm taunting you with it Finny!!" Kinsey doesn't bark at people or dogs thankfully. Actually, Finny is my little guard dog and he barks at everyone and every dog and what does brave little Golden Retriever Kinsey do? She comes running for Mommy and jumps up in my lap for safety! I'm sorry but I'm a complete and utter wuss. My dogs can get away with anything and I think it's precious.
Libby doesn't bark all the time but in the several weeks we've had her, she's barked for numerous different reasons: when she wants to play with us but we're not responding; when she doesn't want to be in her crate; when she can't reach us or a coveted object is out of reach; at the neighbor next door once or twice behind the fence.
When she barks (which can sound mightily deep for her mere 12 weeks) my young son kind of freaks, which makes her bark more... :dogbark

Shadow doesn't bark much at all. He will now bark (never barked as a puppy) at someone outside our home. His bark is enough to "knock your socks off!" He sounds like a bloodhound....it's so deep. I don't know where it comes from.
Tucker barks at all the "right" times. Strangers approaching our home and strange noises. That's it. His bark is a normal bark.

Cayenne never barked or growled as a pup. It took many years for him to bark. He now only barks if someone comes to the door or if I ask him to "Speak".
My 19mth old Golden barked at 8wks when I brought him home. Has many vocal sounds that he utilizes. Never barks when playing & never growls or barks at me; but he will bark with a possible low growl at certain people. Doesn't like tresspassers. If someone comes to the door, it sounds like we have a furious beast waiting behind the door because he barks loud with the possible growl along with it. :dogbark :reddogx

In the 7 weeks we've had Hunter I've heard him bark three times. All 3 times it was at our cats. He doesn't bark when people come to visit or vice versa. I was beginning to think that there was something wrong witih him. Someone had told me that Goldens are not barkers but from the threads I'm reading that person isn't correct. I guess it's just the individual Golden.

Bosco never barked as a very young pup.He is 10months old now and the first time he barked was about 2months ago it shocked everyone because he never had barked and it was very deep and loud.He rarely ever barks and the few times he has,was at night when a stanger was at the door.He usually only barks once and then walks away or begs to be petted. It is really rare for him to bark though.I have never hurd him growl.I love it!I had a beagle who barked at everything and somedays it drove me crazy!!

My ten-month old Daisy started barking about 2 months ago, usually at outside noises....but....recently she has started "talking back" to me when I tell her no.

Doc barks whenever he hears people talking outside the door, people going down the stairs, people walking by, and not recognizing some people at night from afar . Ralphie the scaredy-pup barks a lot now. Whenever he feels threatened, or sees something that looks odd to him, or when someone (even one of us) comes to the front door. It's a loud, scary bark, you'd think he were a rottweiler or some other watchdog, but he's harmless.
We are trying to discourage his barking. We tried the "water bottle sprayer in the face" technique, but I think he's too sensitive for that approach. He's timid of everything. Does anyone have a recommendation on controlling submissive barking?

Dakota is 15 weeks now and she has let out a bark here and there but normally goes days without a peep. I was actually shocked the other day when she barked at the neighbor boy. He was riding up the alley on his big wheel and asked to pet her. She waged her tail but I think she was just scared of the noises of the big wheel, she growled a little, barked, and backed up. I immediately told her no and she stopped. My childhood golden Sasha only barked to let us know someone was entering the house. She was a great watch dog.

What is the best way to correct Ralphie's barking? He is extremely timid, so I don't want to be too forceful. He's 18 months old. Should I try:
Water bottle spray in face?
Saying "quiet!"?
Ignoring?
I have tried all 3 approaches, and would like to know which one I should try again, and stick with. :woofpup

At my old place, Manhattan never barked..it was too scary. Then when I moved 8 houses down, she started to bark. I am guessing since now she has a fenced in yard. I leave the blind open..a bark, she hears people working outside, a bark, I leave the front door open..yep, a bark. In my dreams all I hear are barks..Opps just heard another from playing with her toy. :woofpup

The only time Maggie barks is when the neighbors new puppy is outside. She'll run and jump at the fence and do a high pitched bark tail wagging so I think she wants to play with it but we're not taking any chances since she has a history of not likeing small dogs, and she also does a chubakah sounding wine. She will also do a high pitched bark when she is in her pet carrier and my wife and I are outside working in the yard. She used to bark, again high pitched, when we first got her. She would bark every morning about six am. Thankfully now she'll sleep until the alarm goes off. She has learned that when the alarm goes off that means mommy or daddy is awake and whe will then do soft wineing sounds just loud enough to keep you awake so you'll go and take her out. She does not bark in her carrier unless she knows my wife and I are outside in the yard. Other than those two things, neighbors dog, and us in the yard, she does not bark.
Coba, doesn't bark much in the only when someone walks past our house and usually only at certain neighbours( the ones who are affraid of dogs) He does "talk" (also like chewbacca)to me all the time though usually when his mouth is full(kids!!). Coba quite enjoys suprising people when they walk past his truck, he'll lurk in the back waiting for them to walk past then bark (happily) usually they laugh once they collect themselve's. :reddogx

Roosevelt barks at the cats to get them to play (they are NOT amused)
and he barked at my hand the other day when I did an "off command with a hand sign" He looked at my hand and his lip got all silly and he woofed (I was not amused)
When someone is at the door he rings the sleighbells on the knob and when he has to go potty.

I had Maggie traind to bark when she has to go potty but after a while she stopped and now she will just walk up to me, sit there, and wag her tail. If she really has to go she'll barely lift her front paws off the ground like she's going to jump but she jumps away from you and not on you. If that does not get your attention she'll wine a little but she never barks anymore when she has to go out. She'll do everything but bark. Even when someone comes to the door she'll run to the door, sit there and look out the window at them wagging the tail but does not bark.

Park has very recently started barking at passing neighbors out front. He will sit and look out the window (on the hope chest) and will bark and sometimes growl when someone comes close to our house. He also will bark now if he hears a strange noise outside. Up until just recently he barely made a sound. Now all of a sudden he is rather protective of "his" house.... etc. Now granted, he's wagging his tail while he's barking/growling, however he's beginning to sound... well... mean! I've read that between 6-14 months many dogs begin to show a rise in their level of aggression.. many times becoming protective/territorial. Now... how do I deal with this exactly? I don't really mind him barking when someone is out front, because we live in a college town and on more than a few occasions my car has been messed with. (scratched, written on with lip stick, etc) So, he does bring attention to people out front, which allows me to look out the window and see what's going on. However, we live downstairs of a women, and I don't want her to become angry or annoyed with his occasional barking. We usually walk over, look out the window, and say... "shhhhhh... quiet please Parker." How do other's handle this type of behavior?

Don't confuse guarding behaviors with aggression. I personally don't think they're the same at all. I derive alot of comfort from Daisy keeping an eye out for our home. She's much better at it than I am, she sees more, hears more, especially when it's dark. I know that no one is going to get past the porch, front or back, without her warning me. But I also know she'd never hurt or attack anyone, probably not even a burglar (hmmm....hope I never find out!). She can definitely scare someone who doesn't know her though. We live in a crazy world, I confess that is totally just fine with me :)

Great see that she appreciates Park's keen senses, my wife worries constantly when Coba barks. Coba will bark at any new people who walk by our house, we have a pathway and a chainlink fence, once they introduce thmselves and give him a pat on the head,he'll sit quietly and wait for them to stop and say hi. Come to think of it two summers ago we had a knock on our door, a guy(won't use the word gentleman) said that Coba's barking had scared him as he walked by our house and was going to report him to the By-law officer! If had been home at the time i would have Coba beat him into submission with his tail and then finish him off with his tounge.

That is too funny! I can only imagine the look on the officer's face had they stopped by to check out the situation. To see a big golden furball with his tail going a mile a minute, tongue hanging out, and a smile on his face.... yeah, I would probably have to laugh if someone had described that dog to me as being scary. :roll2

It is a crazy world that we live in and I have to say that having Wendy with us brings me a lot of comfort. That's because no one can be in front of our house w/o her barking and growling. And if they don't leave she won't stop. She is very loud and doesn't sound like a golden at all. Her tail too, is wagging the entire time.
I have found that the easiest and fastest way to get her to stop is to tell her "Good Girl, Good Girl...that's enough." and give a quick look out the window.
When I asked my neighbor about the barking she told me once that Wendy got her to look outside once. And she found that she forgot to lock her doors. And once I noticed her barking at some strange men knocking on my other neighbors door. Wendy isn't guarding our house, she's guarding all of them around us.

Buffy only barks if someone walks down the street. We live in a small town so it happens maybe 4 times a day. She won't bark if she wants back in the house, she'll just stand by the door so I have to keep checking to see if she wants in.
Abby barks a little more frequently. She'll bark if she's excited about something, like getting ready to go for a walk. She has on occasion barked to come in. And she'll also bark at people walking down the street. Abby will also bark at other dogs in their yards or if we pass another dog when we're walking. I've been working on correcting that behavior because once we start camping that behavior will not be acceptable.
Buffy does not bark at other dogs, mainly because she's always been timid around strange dogs. Now though with the supposed protection of her little sister Abby, Buffy has tried to start barking at other dogs but I've nipped that in the bud.

So far Max hasnt barked much at all. I was considering trying to teach him "speak" to let me know when he needs out or in but I am afraid once I train him that it is a good action that I wont be able to stop him lol. I guess I will just wait and see if he picks it up from the neighbors dogs first and see when he uses it before i let him know whether it is desirable or not.

Tailer, our new pup (5 months) who never met Elliot does the same thing! what a talker...
The Barking will come! I would suggest...the first time he barks to say whisper (if it's a quiet bark) and speak (if it's a loud bark) Keep it up and then you will ingrain the sound level and the words.
We use American Sign Language "W" for whisper and "S" for Speak...I want hand signals to work from long distances like they did with Old Dog Elliot...Tailer is still "In Training!"
Good Luck! :050

Chazzy hardly barks at all, if he wants in the house he will do a quiet woof every 10 seconds or so. Reggie barks all the time, no one is getting anywhere near our home or yard without us knowing about it. We too are campers, and the barking is unaceptable at a campsite...I would have to say its my biggest training issue now. If I yell "NO!" or "QUIET!" my yelling makes him bark worse. If I acknowledge hes alerted something "good dog!" and the second he's quiet because i praised him, i add "Good quiet" its much more effective, and he quiets down faster. He goes absolutely nutzo when a dog walks by, way too crazy... then he wont quiet even with praise. Its an issue for sure, Its very unsettling.
We have had Bear (5yrs old) for a little over 2 months. Up until last night we'd never heard him bark. Around 1030 PM
our daughter's boyfriend knocked on the door (which he's done many times in the 2 months) and it must have disturbed Bear's slumber because he started barking..until he saw who it was and he grabbed his favorite toy because he was certain that the visitor was there to play with him.
Was funny as each of the kids came downstairs wondering what was going on and amazed to actually hear him bark..my wife, when she came home from work even asked "what did it sound like?"

I'm glad Ginger hardly ever barks, and so when she does bark while she's in the yard, I know to go there and look. Last time she started barking non-stop, I found there was a small snake by my back porch. Good :reddogx for sure! Mostly, she will bark if she smells or see animals in the yard, rabbits, snakes, etc...
Bear will be out in the front yard with me and other dogs (with their owners) will come strolling by and he barely pays them any mind. We've had visitors come to the door and ring the doorbell..no barking. Various people come to the house (we have some landscaping/construction going on)..not a sound.
on a slightly different note, I've never been so attached to a dog in my life as I am to him.

Totally agree Jim! There's nothing like them is there?! I have several dogs and he's by far the one that I'm very attached to....and him to me!
As far as barking....hardly ever but early in the morning before the sun is up Rusty will need to go out. He patrols the front yard inbetween conducting his business. While he patrols he lets out some kinda half barks....very low but not growling. I couldn't figure out what he saw or smelled that he needed to do this. I finally was out getting the paper and saw my shadow on the ground and thought....aha! sure enough that's what it was....Rusty was warning his shadow....LOL He's always barked at his reflection in windows and I guess his shadow.....must have worked, "shadow" stayed outside....LOL

I rarely hear Luke bark, but he's only 12 weeks, so I wonder if that will change. He barks maybe once a day. It's usually when he gets really excited.

The only time Gordon will bark is when someone that he does not know walks buy or even drives by our house lol....he also tends to bark when hes sleeping in the kitchen and he will sense someone outside.....I thought he would always bark at the cats but he actually plays with them as if he were one! doggiex1

I had to laugh at my response that I gave several weeks ago. Luke barks a lot more now! The great thing is that he now barks whenever he needs to go outside! I'm VERY glad about that!
