We are all so picky about what we feed our GR, but what about those of you with cats? What are you feeding your cat?

When I switched dog food to Canidae I also switched to Felidae (the cat version). However, I have recently noticed some thinning areas in Rajah's coat. So I wonder if this a good cat food? I recently changed dog foods to Innova and plan to switch the cat to Innova too, but I'm really not educated on cat food as well as I am on dog food. I haven't done my cat food homework . . . bad mommy!

So I was just wondering what you guys think in terms of cat foods.

We feed Friend, (yes that is actually her name :laugh2 ) Science Diet, which normally we would NEVER feed our dogs, but friend loves it, and it has dramatically changed her coat and her problem with hairballs. She is 6 years old, :p and we were concerned with all of her shedding, but now its not nearly as much of a problem as it was. Here is a pic of Friend with Her buddy Allie.....well i guess i shouldnt say...buddy... banana

The cats get good kibbles (varies...if something good is on sale, I can't help it..), Wellness...solid gold (the favorite)...and I give them pieces of dog food when I'm working with them (they demand some 'training' time too!), which they love the most and steal some when they can.
Occasionally they get raw, which they love (...I was suprised to find that not all cats do!), and they'll eat other things I 'share', fruits, vegetables...just about anything.

For the most part, look for cat food similar to that of dog food (no by-products, specific meat source etc). Cats need a higher level of protein than dogs, and one essential thing:Taurine (sp?). It's usually added after the food is cooked, (in kibbles)...umm..because it gets cooked out when the kibbles are...cooked.

There's not quite as much out there on cat nutrition, but there is more and more!

I have 2 cats, 13 and 20 1/2 yrs. old I know my 20 1/2 's age because I really couldn't remember exactly, so I called my vet's and they verified with the date of spaying. They have always ate PURINA cat chow. I give the older cat some moist along with it. My 13 yr. old also eats NUTRO dog food, he loves to go over and eat out of "KODY" bowl when "KODY" is eating, These two are the best of buddies, they almost do everything together. jump2

Our cat is quite uppity and will only eat "special kitty" dry cat food mixed with friskie wet food and only if it is mixed just right.

Our four cats, ages 9, 14, 17 and 18 get Friskies wet food twice a day (about 1/6 of a small can each) and for their dry food I mix Science Diet Light Hairball, Nutro Natural Senior and Friskies Dental Diet. I try to cover all the bases. They all seem to like this and do well on it. I can't leave dry food out all of the time though, as two of them will eat until they burst and are a bit overweight. Murphy likes to lick the wet food bowls when they are done!

I recently switched my 2 overweight cats from Whiskers to Felidae. We have noticed a softer, sleeker coat, a reduction in weight, and best of all...much fewer furballs! :029

I appreciate this thread. We have been talking about finding a quality, lower calorie food for my daughters cat. He is starting to get a bit overweight & eats his food very quickly. He has always been on purina cat chow. I would also appreciate it if the stools would decrease. :laugh2

What kind of cat food do you use?

I am regretfully using Iams (don't like them) and looking to switch, don't think that Nutro for cats is much better and can't find a supplier for Felidae in my area. Canidae suppliers don't carry it. I guess most people don't want to use super premium foods for cats?

Have you looked into the Wysong products? They may be just as difficult to find, but I have seen it along with Wellness products at a local natural foods store. Do you have Whole Foods or Wild Oats in your area?

I feed Solid Gold. My male cat has had a lot of trouble with UTI's and he has had only one infectiion in the last year while on this food.

Tink (aka "his holiness") eats c/d Science Diet since he had a bladder infection 2 years ago. Hasn't had one since. I'm a science diet fan--my dogs thrive on it (beautiful thick glossy coats, good teeth, healthy, no problems) and before his infection, he got Science Diet for cats.

Does anyone else have a cat with a bladder/crystal history that feeds something else successfully?
