View Full Version : Eating trees
Does anyone's Golden destroy trees? King has eaten 7 trees, he is 1 1/2 yrs old. He completely pulls them out of the ground and eats them. I could only imagine how much fun he is having. I wish I had a video camera to watch.

we had a puppy named brinkley up til he was 8 months old, and he chewed on our crape myrtles! ALL THE TIME. And all of our dogs love to chew on sticks! Unfortunately its kind of normal, but if you keep a good eye on him, you may be able to reprimand him. Hope this helps!

Wow, sounds like it's time to fence in the trees, or at least those that you want to keep!
We tried putting chicken wire around it, he tore that out and then ate the trees. I am used to this type of behavior because I have had many goldens, but my husband freaks out.

"KELI" our 8 month old, I truely believe in her other life was a "LANDSCAPER"-----She rearranges the yard, "DAILY" !!! Her real specialty is, what we call her, "ANKLE BREAKER", holes!!!She has pruned all the decorative trees and my beautiful old Lilac bush, to her liking. I have all my ex-pens now around the trees. If I could just have her do it MY way, then it would save me a lot of time come spring. :roll2

I found this on petsmart, may help in detering your dog to not eat/dig in certain areas outside:
repellant (http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444178 1552&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302033167&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023689&bmUID=1105654350804)

ANGENBEAR:: It may help some dogs. But if you saw "KELI" I tell ya, she straps on her tools,,and puts on her garden hat and off to work she goes. I broke her of tearing up my potted plants, so she just moved on to bigger and funner things, Trees!!!! It will all come to end soon!!! I hope!!!
I am sorry, but I am laughing reading all the posts. My husband will be glad to hear we are not the only ones.
I had goldens tear up the yard, flowers or little things, but NEVER trees.
Thank you

You can definetely tell Beau's poo pile too. It may be blue from the strings on his rope toy, or flourescent yellow where he chewed the cover off the softball, or pink from his pink pig's ear. Wow a rainbow rofl3. Thankfully he has left the plants pretty much alone. We do have a few mine fields though.

I mentioned this months ago, but I took Bear out to go take care of his business, and out comes a pink thing in his stool, I look closer and it's a pink balloon! Made me wonder how he got it, hehe, I found out that he got that while I had my sis babysit him at her house, she has kids so toys and things were all over the floor. He's fast so they thought that they got the balloon but I guess he got another without them knowing. I"m just glad it didn't get stuck!

Merlin is my resident 'gardener' also!I recently made the mistake of planting 15 new ferns all down the side of the house...went inside to make a cup of coffee....ten minutes later Merlin 'appeared' in the living room-dirt ALL OVER his face and one of my new ferns-well-what was left of it-in his mouth!!(wish Id had my camera-he looked hilarious!!)
Went down to the garden-and yep-there were only 3 untouched-the rest were scattered all over the path and all the leaves were broken or gone...
He is constantly bringing sticks inside-I make him go out on the deck-but its impossible to stop him as our back yard is a forest!!I dont mind generally-but it can get expensive!!!

Well my Bailey is also guilty of "debarking" trees....
She doesnt pull them out of the ground....but she has ripped the bark off all the trees in my backyard (except for 1)....she's part "beaver" hubby said and "ground hog" coz she digs so many holes...
She dig holes next to the tree then pulls the roots up...eats them...some of them..or just runs round the backyard like a nutzo!
And just yesterday she decided to atttack and conquer the only tree that was "off limits" hubbys golden delicious apple tree.
I went into the yard this morning....took a look..there was bits of branches all over the backyard...on the snow..so i went inside spoke to my husband ....my words were "you really love your dog dontcha?? giggle....tell me you really love the dog" hubby took one look at me..laughed and said "she ate my tree didnt she"
Was so funny coz bailey came running into the room..all happy..cold..snow on her snout banana how could ya get mad! She is also part "goat" chewing the grass to bits..tearing up big pieces of turf ...there's a lil golden in her ..somewhere i'm sure. Good luck with the backyard and your trees. jump2 Ooh the stories we all could tell!
Take care!
Betty
Merlin's mom, Bailey's mom,
I had to laugh!! I can picture it all. It is not funny, but yet it is. You know the dog has so much fun doing it. My dad's golden is 9 yrs old, his wife will plant flowers and immediately when she goes into the house, he attacks them! Gone!!
I know the pain. I am going to have my husband read all the posts, it will help with the pain, I am sure.
trees!!!!!!!!!!!
jack eats trees, leaves, grass, flowers, you name it, hes tasted it. hes getting better now though, tell him to drop it, and 99% of the time he does, unless he feels its play timein which case he'll make a run for it. lol
