We just got more dogs :laugh2 We got two Beautiful Irish Setters. They are the most beautiful dogs i have ever seen. They are both AKC and have had their clearances and come from champion bloodlines. They are proven breeders, as they have had one litter together. The lady was just looking for a good home for them. The male is 20 months old, and the female is 4 1/2 years old. She had a litter in June, and that was her first litter. What age is it to old to breed her? She looks beautiful, very fit and tone. Doesnt look older than a year. Here is a pic of her. Thanks for any info, we still arent sure if we will breed them, but they really have a great bloodline, CH's all the way down!!! :485

I don't know much about Irish Setters (sorry I'm no help), but they are very pretty dogs. My mom had them growing up, and I have a neighbor that has one. I have heard that they can be very hyper if not exercised well, but I guess that can be true with any breed. She looks pretty. Good luck!

ALLIE::::What clearances does the 20 month old have????You can't OFA until 2 yrs. Maybe you had better find out a little bit more info...About the breed, I always remember the scene in, CADDY SHACK, when the Setter is running across the golf course and they are calling it's name, and it just keeps running, ears flapping, tail high in the air and not giving a "HOOT" about anything but it's (as they portray it) own self. There were other words I'd like to have said about that scene, but silence is GOLDEN, watch the movie, then you'll see what I am referring to rofl3 After you find out about those clearances for a 20 month old  and if you decide to breed them and the bitch just had a litter in June, Rule of thumb, bitch should only whelp every 2 years. That is what makes for a strong, healthy mama, and strong healthy pups. You should know the breed standard front and back!! No matter what you breed it must conform to the standard of that breed, that is what helps promote quality in any and all breedsl.. Just do your, HOMEWORK. Your setter looks lovely in the pic. BEWARE, their attention span is limited, easily distracted. After a couple weeks with them I'd be interested in your thoughts. GOOD LUCK :029--By the way, these dogs do require grooming, There is a pattern cut designed for this breed, or you could just go, "AHH NATUREEL" you should have a good groomer lined up. In over 20 yrs. of grooming and training I have had the countless opportunity to work with darn near every breed and mixed type breeds put on this earth. My jobs give me the opportunity to see the reactions to situations that dogs encounter and how their demeaner is. I know it's only the tip of the iceberg, but on many occassions different breed have taken my by surprise, Believe me I have the scarrs to prove it.

I am very excited for you that you have given a home to these two Irish Setters. I grew up in NJ around Irish Setters, and that was my childhood dog that lived until 17 yrs old. My parents have one now that was a show puppy that is now 12 yrs old and doing great. They are an awesome breed and seeing that you have a farm they should have lots of room to run. And its perfect your a groomer with their long hair. We always had males so I do not know about the breeding but they are an excellent breed with a nice lifespan. Hope you enjoy them! Living in Florida now I rarely see any except my parents, due to the climate. Hope you get the info you need.

Today is day two with these guys! I must say, the male is precious, he is so calm and sweet. He has such a serious look about him, :021 it makes us both laugh. I guess because Goldens are soooo happy looking. :roll2 The biggest difference between setters and goldens is that setters act more like cats. They are more independant minded. (which is good AND bad)
Goodtim'n, :380 its funny that you mentioned that part in the movie, cause, YEAH THAT happened yesterday with the female. She took off running and i was yelling at her, and she just kept on going....My husband came out and she just ran right up to him..... :048 She is a bit of a snot. She is sweet, but VERY spoiled. Thanks for the responses! I will try to get a good picture of the male, Blaine, he is the most gorgeous of the two!!! He has a cute white spot on his chest and he has longer hair than Lani. Thanks again! cheerleade

Our neighbor had Irish setters. Using his for example as well as several others I have met I can say this about them vs. Goldens.
The setter can be much more energetic
The setter can be a very uncordinated dog
The setter tends not to be a chow hound like the Golden
The setter tends to make a much better watchdog.
The setter tends to not need attention like a Golden.
The setter is just as loving and respectfull as a Golden.
I am glad to read here that the breed is still around. Here in my location your lucky to see a couple of these guys in a years time. Most are used as hunting companions.

Hope things go well with the dogs! Nice picture.
For as popular and well-known as goldens are, I've had MANY people mistake him for an Irish setter, and once for a Toller. But he's no-where as red!
Just be sure to plan carefully. From what I've heard, they're definately getting more than thier share of genetic problems.

Hi Summer, looking forward to seeing some pictures of your two setters. I have been around setters for over 30 yrs, grew up with them and now have Goldens, they are both awesome breeds. Here is some of my experiences:
Setters have a lot less health problems
Longer life span
Don't need as much attention, or at least constant, ha ha
Need lots lots of exercise
Great with kids-if you have them
Good protectors
Definetely independent, if they see something, they can completely block you out, stubborn.
We would take ours on car rides and if it wasn't long enough, he would refuse to get out! Too cute.
Well, hope that helps, ask anytime you have a question, I know they like the cooler climate, don't like to be hot, I don't know if you live in a cool climate.

Thanks for the info, and i would think that describes these guys to a T! Do you know how much food they eat, they dont seem to eat a lot, but we want to make sure they are eating enough? They are both really sweet dogs, but we cant let them outside like we can our Goldens. They cant really be trusted not to run off. Do you have any advice, we are having to take them out on a leash. We have a large Kennel. 30X30, and we put them in there, and take them for walks. We let her loose the first day and she took off, and there was no stopping her!! Do you have any info on how we can train them to stay close? Thanks so much for all the info! banana

Hi, yes they don't usually stay close to you. We always had our setters on a leash, but they were always difficult to walk, I mean the pulling. My parents 12 yr still pulls!!! We got a 100 ft rope, with a chain on the end to hook to the collar, so if you have the room to let them run, at least they can't keep going. That way our setters would run in circles and just play. It would get tangled, but it was worth it to getting lost. We still use one on my parents setter. With food, ours were picking and we always had to water their dry food down or put cooked chicken in it, fed in morning and night, about the same as Goldens. It may not be the healthiest giving them canned food or chicken, but they didn't get sick and lived long. So maybe try different things. They get to be full size like Goldens so they should eat about the same. When their hair grows long also especially on the legs and belly has to be brushed everyday, gets tangled easily, especially if it gets wet. I'm sure theyl'l be happy and settle into a routine. Hope that helps. Let us know how it goes.

We have had a pretty fun day with all our babies today! banana They have been adjusting well to each other, and of course, our golden girls have been nothing but sweet :p to them. They have been good about going out on the leash and playing with us while being on the leash. banana They also enjoy the kennel, but love being in the house with us most of all. :003 Its wierd adjusting :054 to this new breed, because they really are a lot different. Not worse, just different. They have some really cute attributes, that Goldens dont have. I would recommend them really. Blaine, the male has a very impressive bloodline. The lady that them to us, gave us all the paperwork that goes with their bloodline. Its pretty cool! They are both really good in the house, and are actually pretty lazy. They like to go outside a couple of times a day, but other than that, they are laying on you, or your feet sleeping. So far, so good :032 Thanks for all the replies!

We looked at his actual papers and he is older than that. The lady told us he was 20 months, but we just got his actual papers. We have a copy of the ofa certificate.
we know someone who met 2 Irish Setters. Apparently they are REALLY hyper. She said they are way more hyper than goldens. :dogbark But I know that they are really beautiful dogs! ( Still prefer goldens though! he he) :woofpup
