Hi,
I have an eight month old Golden. I brush her every day, but just under and behind her ears she has--what I will call "unruly" fur. This fur sticks out and no matter how fine a brush I use, it still looks unbrushed. It will not lay flat. Is this normal for a Golden or is it fur that maybe needs to be trimmed?
Thanks for any advice!

A picture would be helpful.
The ears, in general, are one of those problem areas on the golden. i.e. if left untrimmed or uncared for, they could get out of control. Personally, I like the ear area to be keeped trimmed and not out of control.

Thinning shears (looks line a combination between a comb and scissors) are a good grooming tool for ears. Be sure to go sparingly and not clip too much at once...trust me!

Thanks! I will pick up some thinning shears and try them--carefully on the unruly hair!

Bailey's fur looks unruly behind the ears as well. But I think it's just because it's crimped looking. It's not straight -- so I always think it's getting matted or icky, but it's actually ok. My previous GR had so much hair back there - it was definately a struggle to keep it untangled.

That is exactly what Katie's fur looks like just under and behind her ears--almost like crimped, but not tangled or matted. She is a field Golden so does not have that "fluffy" furry look and I think I may have to trim this up a bit cause it does kind of stick out on her. I am going to try the Thinning Shears mentioned on the post above!
