I am helping a friend research the Weimaraner breed. I was just wondering if anybody had any information or opinion on this breed.

Well my first account of this breed goes back around 40 years ago. When I had a paper route, this dog caused me more headaches than all the German Shepards on the route combined.I did learn that the dog was trained to take in the newspaper hence everytime I tried to walk up to the door I managed to catch his rath. Once I started giving him the newspaper to take it he became very friendly and never barked at me again. Years later I had a chance to see the breed as they really are. Very warm dogs who love to hunt, very well mannered. You just don't see many of these around.
If my memory is correct the breed started in Germany.

HIGH ENERGY, VERY ACTIVE, I had 2 of them this summer in training and even though the owners where very capable of handling their dogs, These dogs were busy. Once we got their attention we had to work quickly with them for they seemed to easily get sidetracked. The dogs were owned by 2 different people, but acted the same way. That has been my experience with them. They were also kinda of the class clown. The look they give you is darn different that other dogs due to the coloring of their eyes. They made me laugh at them alot.

My aunt had 4 of them when I was growing up. I loved them to death because they were so much fun to play with.
Now that I am older and the 4 Weim's aren't with us anymore, I will talk to my Aunt about them from time to time and she always brings up all her horror storys about them.
Her and her daughter had planned on making cookies from scratch and had left a large bag of flour on the kitchen counter one day when they left to go somewhere. When they got home the flour was spread all throughout the house and the dogs had big balls of white flour stuck to them everywhere because they were trying to lick it off of each other.
She always said they were great dogs, just a little michevious. As a kid, I loved them.

Well, my good friend has one and it is one of the sweetest and friendliest dogs I've ever met, but he is extremely bouncy. He is constantly jumping and running around. Okay, so this might not sound so bad, but she cannot leave the dog alone in the house. He is very distructive and she refuses to crate him b/c he was not crated as a puppy. She brings him to doggy daycare everyday and if both her and her husband leave the house and are not able to take him with them then the dog stays with her mother. I know a lot of this is because the dog is completely spoiled, but not in a good way. I can't imagine having a dog that I could never leave by itself. I've heard of this distructiveness before in Weimeraners. They can get very bad separation anxiety...even worse than goldens.

I'm beginning to think that my friend should look into another breed, only because she has never owned a dog before. I just think that starting out with a Weimaraner might be too difficult for her. Thanks for all the responses!!

The story about the dogs getting into the bag of flour is funny. The dog I posted about earlier also did some mischief.
The couples son was in med school and while visiting for the holiday decided he would work on his lab project that of disecting a human eye. He stayed up until 4 AM finishing the job and went to bed. When he woke the next day he discovered the lab tray he had everything in was on the floor and the dog made a meal out of his project. I guess the old excuse of "the dog ate my homework" can really happen

There is one at puppy school, in Abbeys class. It is huge!! And she has to walk it before class to calm it down a bit!! It is hard work for her, she must be exhusted by the end of the class. They are very handsome dogs, but very big!!
