View Full Version : names...careful what you choose
PLEASE be careful on the name you choose for your dog, think it out, run different names and commands thru your head cause once you choose a name, theres no going back.
want an example, we named our goldie jack, now we go to the puppy school and the command for him to drop something or to get down is "off". you put the 2 together. its funny i tell ya. rofl3

:laugh2 Rotf! Too funny! We didn't name our GR as he just came to us at age 3 1/2. Our dillema is that he's Jake & our oldest son is James (12 years old). It wouldn't be SO bad if James wasn't Hard of Hearing & many times answers "what" when we call Jake! :dogbark LOL I guess that I should take advantage & always have a request of him James even if I'm calling the dog. I might get more accomplished in my day! :laugh2

HAHAHAHAHA!!! We named our golden Jack also. I never even thought about how I sounded yelling "Jack off!!" when I wanted him to stay off the furniture or not jump on people. One day my teenage daughter had some friends over and the boys (of course...) picked up on that right away. Needless to say, I changed his command to down!

You know, I picked out Kinsey like a year before we actually got her. I just knew I loved the name and my next dog was going to be Kinsey. And NO, she is not named after the sex researcher, Kinsey. Though I think Sue Grafton and her "alphabet" murders are so so (not exactly Tom Clancy!), I fell in love with the name then. The heroine is named Kinsey Milhone. That's where I found it.
Our male Sheltie mix is named Finny. He's very white and is actually named Finbar which means "fair haired". Yes I named him as soon as I saw him at the shelter.
So we have Finn and Kin and yes..........I get confused and tongue tied all the time. I'm 54 you guys. :054

Oh my gosh-thats hilarious-ROTF......
It reminds me-I have a friend who called her dog Sidney-but he was Sid for short-and so often she'd call him-and he'd 'sit' perfectly-because thats what he thought she'd said!

I totally agree that you have to be careful with names. Our Golden was called Corrie and everyone thought we'd named her after the british soap called Coronation Street, which is called corrie for short. We chose the name because we'd lived in Holland and its a popular girls name there and also in Scotland where we come from it means a dip or low ground. But everyone thought we 'soap' fanatics and named corrie after a TV show lol :laugh2 - I don't think so!

Okay, I guess names ending in "Jack" need to be seriously mulled over. Jack is such a cute name.....I would have never thought about that until it was too late! Thank you guys for sharing these unfortunate, but hilarious stories! :laugh2

Thanks for the good giggle!
My best friend has a Goldie, she's a beautiful red Field Golden from Arkansas and her CKC name is Summers Fyre (sort of how i thought up my Winters Storm...)
Well, it wasn't until we started taking her to dog parks when she got older and realized yelling Fyre at the top of your lungs sure gets some crazed looks by people wondering what is on "Fire"
It was quickly decided it would have to be a very quick COME following Fyre!!

We named our old lab Hooter. When he was tiny he made this hooting sound. I guess we were not thinking at the time because many people brought it to our attention that we named him after boobs! We didn't want to change his name so I was asked for 13 years if I knew what Hooters were! :laugh2 :laugh2
i guess i'm not the only person that thought a name was a good one without thinking it thru. we have learned to change his command to either down, or drop it, "jack... off" was just getting too many looks from the neighbours, and one neighbour thought it was outta this world and to this day still says, jack... "off", especially when people are walking past.
guess you gotta chose your neighbours better too. lol.
thanks for the laughs everyone.
any more people out there with names that should have been changed before it was too late???

Well it didn't sound funny with a command, but when I was a teen Our Silky Terrier had 2 pups. Silkies when first born are small, black, and of course slimy. I said he looked like a Slug. Poor thing - the name stuck.
Imagine the looks around the show ring with a beautiful Silky with flowing hair with a call name SLUG. Yep - we should have rethought it - but it was too late. :laugh2

I had a similar problem in obedience school with Seamus (pronounced Shay-Muss).
When we were learning "SIT", I seemed to have a some kind of occasional mental block.
Instead of saying "Seamus, Sit", what would come out was "Saymus Sh__".
The instructor always laughed and said "Are you sure you want him to do that now!" rofl3

Hi guys,
When we first got Lucy our Golden we waited a few days to name her. Well before we named her I decided to take her for a walk, without really knowing anything about her. So as we're two blocks from home a bird shot past her nose. Now Lucy was also part irish setter, and I was walking her on the leash of our old dog a Schnawzer Poodle mix. Well when that bird when past Lucy's nose she took for the bird, right out into the street. Now because we hadn't named the dog, and I was caught way off guard about to do, AND because the leash snapped I yelled the ONLY thing I could think of. I yelled G** D***it! I'm still amazed almost 12 years later that the dog ran back to me and sat right at my feet. She was named within 24 hours. :)

Just found this thread and decided to post (because when I turn off the computer I have to iron my clothes for work tomorrow and I am procrastinating!)
My former boss had a boxer named Sexie. He and his wife thought it was cute because as a puppy she would wiggle her behind at them. When she got older she became an escape artist. Picture a distinguished surgeon running down the street yelling "Sexie, where are you?"
Another good name...I was observing an obedience class and there was a tiny yorkie whose name was Killer. Funny part is he was the most ferocious dog in the class. My daughters GR would look at the little mass of growling teeth and fur trying to figure out what it was. Our dog's name was Hoser (named after the expression the McKenzie Brothers on Saturday Night Live used toward each other in a derogatory manner). Hoser tried to make friends but Killer nipped at him so Hoser walked away rather confused.
This brought morning chuckles!
I have a friend whose dog is named Please....please sit, please come, please down.
Another friend named her dog Guess. When at the pet store people will ask what the dog's name is and of course the response is "Guess". It turns out like an Abbott and Costello routine....
