We gave Dakota a Pedigree Dentabonebonex1 (see below) just about an hour ago and she just loved it, however, 5 minutes after gnawing on it she threw up :(. Coincidently, as we were cleaning up her vomit, a girlfriend called and I told her what had happened. She in turn told me that she gave her dog Bailey a Dentabone on two different occassions, and she threw it up both times...she has never given it to her since.
After hearing this, we threw out what was remaining of the Dentabone.
Anyone have a similar story or is this purely coincidence? :dogbark

The ingredients didn't really please me, though I did get a few at one point. Blaze can eat anything without being sick, so he was fine but it only lasted a few minutes. I give the dogs real raw bones which they love, and which last MUCH longer!

Super cute pic. " I" personally never give pups anything they can chew up, because they don't really know how to sit and chew things up. They usually chew on it and then swallow chunks. Why your pup threw up, I don't know, nor would I even guess. I would just be careful of giving things that are easily swallowed at this age. Get a nyla bone. and have your pup go to work on that, she will enjoy it.

Gracie once threw up after eating a Booda bone (made from cornstarch). Messy chunks - yuck. I haven't given her any edible bones since then, except for Greenies.

I agree with goodtim'n. I tend not to give eatable bones. Dogs can bite off a chunk too big and cause real problems in the digestive system. A few months ago I was at the vet and she had just come out of surgery to remove a large piece of a Greenie from a Rottweiler's throat. I will give an occational eatable bone when I want some peice and quiet (like during a movie or when a friend is visiting) but I watch Cassidy like a hawk. I don't let her out of my sight for a second. If I see her bite off any large pieces then I take the bone away. However, she had lots of nylabones laying around the house (one of each flavor). So far, she has not been able to bite off any chunks. They just wear down over time.
BTW: If MY dog would ever throw up over something I gave her, I would NEVER give it to her again!

I gave Merlin one of these about two months ago-he also was sick-so I've never given him another one again.Interesting that a few dogs have had this reaction ...
Merlin loves chewing bones-so I stick to real ones mainly-and the occasional pigs ear!

I had given Buddy those on occasion but wasnt pleased with them. They give him diahorrea so stopped buying them. Also, my friend cant give them to her dogs as they have the same problem.
There is another teeth cleaning bone which is wonderful and quite soft. The name escapes me and not even sure if they have them in north america. Something is telling me that they are Japanese. They are green in color and are shaped like a toothbrush. Buddy loves them and never a problem.

I tend to stick with the real beef marrow bones, from the butcher or meat counter at the grocery. buy them, store them in the freezer, and they're like popsicles for the boyz.. I give them to them, when they need to be busy, with something... like snow storms, visitors, movies, etc.. when they've expended their initial use, I boil out any remaining marrow, and then store them, back in the freezer with PB, or liverwurst... that's what they get, when I leave for work.. it's their cue, that I'm gonna be gone for a bit.. they have little cookies, or mummy's biscotty, for doggies, but aside from that... an occassional rawhide, if I'm gonna be around, but never unattended, or crated, with rawhide.
just my thoughts..

Gracie tends to swallow BIG chunks of the so-called edible bones and then she gets sick the next day (or in the middle of the night). I only did this once, and now, no more dentabones or anything from the regular grocery for her.

Rule of tumb.Hard bones that do not break apart are bad. They can also wear and break teeth. Our dental specilit has had to do many root canals bondings becuase of hard bones.
Not sure about te Pedigree dena bones (many companies use the name DENTA or DENTIbone).
I prefer the nubbed chews that get ruff as they chew it, hower they do not break teeth and act liek a toothbush to scrub the teeth.
Greenies can be good also. But don't give then every day. Pricey also.
Stay away from anythig with rawhide. Once and awile it is ok. To much is not good. Also make sure your rawhides are cured or processed. A note, all baceria does not die from freezing, soem lay dorment only.
If it diagrees wth yoru pups stomach stay awy from it. Could just be him, but I am not big on soem of those secondary food company chews.
