We welcome you here, and that's great you come a month before you get your pup, that way you can learn as much as you can and not be overwhelmed.
Ah, male or female. It's up to you. Maybe if you meet the pups, you can see what pup fits you. If you are getting this from a reputable breeder, the breeder should fit a pup that bets fit you and your lifestyle and personality. I myself prefer males because to me, they provide strength and security, but females can provide that too. Also, I don't have to handle with periods with females, although I do have to probably in the future deal with markings =o\

Welcome to the board. You'll find it very helpful.
If size is a factor, females are usually a little smaller than males. Our first golden was a female.
Our new golden is a male. We originally were worried about males marking territory, but no problem with that. He still pees like a girl, which is fine with me.

You'll have to decide what to believe!
It depends on your lifestyle and the kind of dog you want. And even then with your breeders help its no guarentee that the puppy will be just right! Your breeder should be able to help you decide. Watch the pups, and you'll probably know which one is 'right'!

I don't think that's necessarily true. If you pick one that is scared of you, then you will have to work hard in gaining trust and teacing self esteem. I would ask the breeder for their input, tell them what lifestyle you lead and what personality of a dog that you want, and what would best fit you.

i think im gonna get a male but i dont want it to "mark" everywhere.i want a male so bad.But i think i got to get a female because it doesn't do markings.
if i spray a male will it do markings?

Not all male dogs mark, and not very many do indoors. Some people think that neutering will not cause a male dog to 'spray' indoors, though its not necessarily true. Neutering does probably decrease the likeliness of the dog doing so.
Keep in mind-some female dogs mark too!
Go with what you want, but keep an open mind.

I think genetics and personality are more important in picking a pup rather than male vs. female. If you get a healthy puppy with a personality that suits you then you forget the whole sex altogether.
I believe with good training any golden puppy can make a good family pet. But this sounds like your first puppy. Since you are new, I have a few recommendations. DO NOT PICK THE SCARED PUPPY IN THE CORNER. Unless you are an experienced dog handler, this is not the puppy for you. You want one of the puppies that is out playing with the rest of the litter. You also want a puppy who runs right up to greet you with no fear in meeting a new person. Also, watch the puppies playing. You will notice that when they play some of them roll on their backs while other stand over. You want the pup that rolls on their backs - this is a sign of submission.
Thanks for being a responsible dog owner and doing your homework BEFORE getting your dog. I wish more people were like you. cheerleade

Cutelilgoldens, I can't help but feel that you are real young...at least a lot younger than me! I guess by your wording, you come across as a young person. Do you live alone, with your parents, married, roommate? I was just curious about your living situation where it concerns a new pup.
So much to think about and it's good you're here getting tips and sharing your concerns. This is A HUGE committment.

What does your husband think of acquiring a Golden pup? Is he willing to help with the training and all it takes to raise an active puppy? That is half the battle!

Welcome to the forum.
So much help here. My Golden who is almost 8 mos now chose us. I went to the breeder intending to get a female, but then Beau came forward, licked and played and plopped down in my lap and I just could'nt say to. He was much stockier build than the females and has made a wonderful pet. The females were beautiful though, I wish I had the courage to get 2.

I'm not as experienced as many others on this board, but I will agree that you NOT choose a shy puppy, since this is your first golden. Actually, shy ones are probably not too common anyway. But, my point is, our male (our second golden) is VERY SHY. We got him at 8 mos. of age from the breeder. He is a real challenge, and I don't think it would have worked for us to have had him as our first golden. Also, shy dogs are not suitable for families with young children, or young couples who plan to have children.
On another point, I originally did not want a male because of worries about spraying, but Ralphie has not been a problem at all, and he hasn't even been neutered yet. (Hope I don't jinx myself here!) We were advised to wait until his first birthday to neuter him. Both vet and breeder agreed he needs as much testosterone as he can get, until he gets more confidence. And he is getting better every day.
We went from a tall, lanky female with a very outgoing personality, to a very shy stocky male, with issues. We have experience from our female, who passed away in September, but we're still feeling our way with Ralphie. He's the polar opposite of Bonnie, who was our very first dog ever. So we're learning a whole new set of rules here. But we knew what we were getting into, and we don't have small children anymore.
This forum has been an enormous help to us, along with shy dog books. There are lots of experienced golden owners here who really know their stuff, and you can count on them for good advice. Good luck with your pup!

Oops! Sorry. :o Okay, then what does your WIFE feel about bringing home a Golden pup? Is she all for it? The reason I ask, is I hadn't seen anything about her mentioned here and it's definitely important for everyone to be on the same page with puppies! :woofpup
Good luck!

I would also do research on when is a good time to neuture since you said you dont' want to deal with male dogs that do markings. Most vets will say 6 months, but with large breeds I heard that it's better to wait til their growth spurt is mostly done. I'm waiting for Bear to be a year and decide by then if he needs one or not. He's an only dog and doesn't go out without a leash.

You can't be too old. Didn't you say something about your parents not allowing you to play outside because you might get kidnapped?
Forgive me if i'm remembering incorrectly.
