Corrie had to be put to sleep on 26th January 2005. She was only eight and a half years old. I cannot think of her without crying. She was the most wonderful dog, a kind and gentle Golden Retriever, she was taken from us suddenly and I can't come to terms with her loss. I am trying to post a photo of her but I don't know if it has worked. She died in my arms, it was the hardest thing I have ever done, but I couldn't desert her in her final moments. We loved her and she loved us, she was happiest when we were all together. She loved life. How will we manage without her. Good night and God bless precious angel.

I'm sooo sorry for your loss. 2 yrs ago my 10 yr. old, also died in my arms. There are no words for the gut wrenching that takes place at that moment. But I am now sooo glad I held her soooo close to my heart at that moment, when she said good-by!!! I hope in time you will come to terms, such as I have about the passing and having them in your arms. I would not have wanted her to leave any other way. It was an unexpected death, She laid in my arms and crossed over the bridge. Again I am sooo sorry, Losing the, GREAT GOLDEN in our lifes impact us forever!!! :dogbark But that is the purpose of this wonderful breed, they leave paw prints on our HEARTS!!!!

I am so sorry for your loss. I'm glad you got to be with her and hold her! She was a beautiful girl! I know it's hard. I had to put my German Shepherd down in November and I still miss him like crazy and cry.

Corrie was a beautiful lady. I am so sorry for you. It hurts so much when they leave us. I now wish I had held my Princess in her final moments. I left the room and my husband held her. But I can still see her face watching me leave & that tears me apart. She was my baby, but she also hated to see me cry, so I left the room so she would not be upset at me crying. I am crying now as I type, I would do anything to have her back. It does get easier with time, but they are such a big part of our lives that they will always be in our hearts.

As I have said before, please come here & talk to us, as so many of us have been through this & understand your pain.

Thank you all so much for your kind words. It does help to know that other people understand how painful the loss of a treasured pet is. She was indeed a beautiful girl, the photo of her was her at her happiest, in the water with a huge stick in her mouth. She was always carrying something, preferably half a tree! It's good to know you are all out there. Thanks, Linda.

I think everyone who checks in on the Longevity forum have experienced the `hole in the heart' left by our babies...I lost mine two weeks ago , with his sweet snout in my hand .This forum has been so very kind to me. We truly share your loss. Beautiful picture-thanks for sharing.

You and Corrie will be in my prayers. We lost our golden girl last fall, so I know how you feel. Support from others who loved Corrie, and who love goldens, will help you the most. She was so fortunate to have you with her when she crossed the bridge. God bless.

Sorry for your loss. Even though it is weighing heavily on your heart now you will be glad later on that you were able to hold her as she crossed.

I am so sorry that you had to lose your baby so unexpectedly.
Remember, time heals all wounds and think of your girl as she was in the picture, happy and smiling all the way.
God Bless

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, she was a beautiful girl with the spirit and temperment to match -- just look how full of joy she was in that picture! Our thoughts are with you - it's got to be the most heart-wrenching experience ever. We do understand how deeply you cared for her and how much you'll miss her! These dogs....they ask for so little, but give us SO much :-)

My son found this poem the night we had to put our beloved 10 yo baby down:

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

I wish I knew the author to attribute. I do know every time I re-read it , I cry all over again. My SO sez I spend too much time on this site, that I am obsessing since the loss of my baby. I swear, it feels like I'll never ever get over it. By being on this site however it seems that others also have this same level of grief locked in their hearts, even for loved pets that are done for years. When does it get better? Does it?

Yes it does get get better but I think each person has their own personal time frame & ways of coping with their loss. I don't think there is ant right way or wrong way. The only other thing that I can say is that for the rest of my life every time I hear of someone losing their dear pet it will tug at my heart & bring tears to my eyes because it reminds me again of my own loss & I can truely feel for the person who is going through a recent loss. I can tell most everyone on this board feels the same way.

PS I'm printing out the poem you posted to send to an elderly neighbor who had his 15 year old mixed breed put to sleep on Tuesday 2/1. She had severe arthritis and stopped eating & then drinking last week. She was his best friend & he will miss her dearly.

Thanks Mybaby - that poem is lovely, it made me cry again but the words are a real comfort too. Its two weeks tomorrow since we lost our precious angel. I'm not crying all the time but little things can set me off again so easily. We were at a Garden Centre on Sunday and found a lovely standard rose which is described as copper/orange and it is called "Remember Me" we thought it seemed like a perfect memorial for Corrie. We shall plant it in the spring with her ashes.

What a great idea! My Sammy was orange too. I ,too, will now look for an orange rose to plant next to his Pawprints memorial stone . Thank you. And I am so sorry for your loss. It's such a large hole in the heart , isn't it?
