I feel silly asking!
Is it a good idea, so he'll get used to it?

yes, go ahead. We bathed Cooper shortly after we got him (maybe a week after, so around 8 weeks). It rained a lot right after we got him and he got all muddy so we went for it. He didn't know what to think. Make sure you use a mild shampoo (we used Johnson's baby shampoo instead of a doggie shampoo because we only had flea shampoo in the house, but I heard baby shampoo is actually good for pups).

Not sure if your pup would still fit in the kitchen sink but that's where Cooper got his first bath :)

You can bath him trying to get him used to it, but don't use any soap (I don't use soap at all when I give mine a bath, only when he is VERY dirty when hitting a mud pile).

I wouldn't give him a bath too often unless it is very necessary.

Jake also gets a bath at least once every two weeks.

I bathe Rockne pretty often since he goes to daycare and comes home feeling like cotton candy from dog slobber....they just look so darn cute after a bath too :woofpup

Rockne is just adorable :)

I recently heard that after you're through rinsing, rinse again with cool water. Warm/hot water opens pores, releases histamines and causes itchiness. Cool water closes the pores and has the opposite effect on histamines. I often notice that Daisy is itchy after a bath and I bet that's why! I haven't tried the cool water final rinse yet but I will the next time she gets a bath.

I used to bathe Daisy more frequently -- but since she's grown and upwards of 80 lbs ... bath time is a chore and a half. She now gets a bath only when she needs one

You should bathe him to keep him clean and to get him used to it. Also be careful not to get water in the his ears when you are washing him.

Butterfinger gets baths about every 2 weeks. Plus she gets hosed off in the tub with water after romping in the mud.

I NEED to bathe CC and Rudi hourly. They have lots of mud and a stream to play in. My Kitchen floor looks pretty muddy also. Anyway, I try to bathe them weekly (they sleep in bed with us). In between, I use baby butt wipes. I use the tub, but Rudi really is too big....it is a BIG chore and I wish I was rich so they could go to the doggie spa.

Well, Ralphie got filthy yesterday. The snow in the yard is melting, and it rained, too. All that snow we had kept things clean for a while. One of the items on my hubby's honey-do list is to repair the hose connection at the back deck, so we can hook up a small hose there. That will help a lot. Maybe he'll get to it sooner now, lol.

Ralphie smells so good now, I think we'll do this every two weeks too! We have a large shower stall with a hand-held shower massage head. It works pretty well in there. Of course, I get fairly wet too. But it's easier for me than trying to get him into the bathtub. He's almost full grown at 11 mos. It's the first time I've bathed him by myself. He was very good, much better than I expected him to be.

Goodtimin', is it a good idea to put cottonballs in his ears so they stay dry? Sorry I didn't think of it last night. I will also try the cool rinse next time. Is it okay to use the hair dryer on low? That's what I did.

My husband helped me a little, and took some pictures, which I'll try to post soon.

Thanks,
Mary E.

How do folks handle the ear protection part during baths? I read, perhaps on this forum itself, that water must not be allowed to enter the ears especially for Goldens since they have drop-down ears.

I tried putting in cotton wool but then the minute the cotton wool is in her ears she shakes her head so much that they just have to come out.

Honey does not enjoy baths at all so it is a challenging task to give her a good bath in the first place. She starts jumping up on me after a while not to mention the endless whining until we are through.

I don't have a tub so I settle in for the sink, and use the water tumbler/hand shower alternately to get the task done. Luke warm water is used for the bath along with a soft puppy, foam-free shampoo.

After reading your posts, I feel I ought invest in a portable tub exclusively for her.

wedging a few cotton balls down the ears works! you gota have a couple, and stick them down there and put more in if they come out.

I don't soak Riley's head at all. I bathe her up to her neck and rinse really well, and then I just use a wash cloth for her face and head so she doesn't get water in her ears. I don't know what to do in the summer when she swims in the lake! I don't think cotton balls would stay in. What do you lake people do??
