View Full Version : Anyone have a rabbit?

I was just curious whether anyone had a rabbit as well as a dog? I had a bassett and a rabbit growing up, and the rabbit dominated that relationship. Now I have my golden pup (16 weeks) and my rabbit (4 years) named Cadbury (Caddie). Sometimes they get along fine, but other times, like when Baxter plays too aggressively, Caddie kicks his butt! She charges him, jumps at him, and occasionally kicks him (one time she actually pulled a football tackle on him!). Luckily she's never clawed him - that's what really hurts. Caddie weighs about 10 pounds, so she's no push-over, and she was around first, so she doesn't put up with much. It's actually kind of funny to watch Baxter back down to her, especially since I want him to learn that he cannot play with her in an aggessive manner (I do step in if he starts). So, anyone else have a bunny? Most people don't realize what wonderful pets they are. They are very sweet and affectionate!

We have a mini-lop named Harry. He's a sweet little cuddler. We've had Callie for 4 weeks and just the other day introduced them. The room that Harry's cage is in is off-limits at this point to Callie so we didn't introduce them right away - we figured Callie would always want to go in there if she knew Harry was in there.

Well, it seems like Callie couldn't care less about Harry. However, Harry did the funniest thing. He keeps moving his litter box to the entrance to the cage. He's never done that before and every time I move it back to the corner he pushes it up again. I'm guessing he's marking his territory with a big box of his droppings! "Don't even think about coming in this cage you big furry dog!" Very cute.

I wish it was just the rabbit marking territory! We did the same thing - keep the rabbit in a separate room and introduce them gradually. We've had problems with Baxter peeing in that room, though, even though he seldom has accidents elsewhere. We thought he might be trying to claim some territory for himself, especially since we have such a dominant rabbit. I had her for 4 years as my only pet and she pretty much had the run of the house, so she doesn't like having to share. :o Plus, Baxter LOVES to eat her hay! :laugh2 I'm just glad they get a long fairly well.

I have a "foster" rabbit I'm trying to find a home for.

He's very sweet and Ginger (Golden) is really good with him! He's a little nervous around the other two dogs though and will thump if they come up to his cage...
It's funny because my foster dog is 9 pounds and this rabbit is only about 2-3 pound less than him!

Here's a photo. His name is Cappuccino--

I had a rabbit years ago and it was the worst pet I ever owned! It wasn't one of the cute lop earred bunnies, in fact, I wouldn't be suprised if it was a wild bunny! I won it at a county fair and I brought it home thinking I would litter box train it, etc. Instead, it pooped all over and chewed all the electrical cords. That is when I learned a bunny can growl (sort of) and charge! I was actually afraid of him. I did the good thing and gave him to a friend who had bunnies on a farm. I have heard the lop earred bunnies can make fantastic pets, but I think I had the wrong kind of rabbit!

Oh, Cappuccino is a doll! I know when I got Baxter my bunny, Caddie, was about his size (she's a big 10 lb. girl). She is spoiled rotten, too. Yes, the lops can be sweet, but Caddie is not a lop and she's an absolute doll. I'm sure part of the behavior comes from breeding. In my experience, big bunnies tend to be fairly calm, whereas smaller breeds are sometimes more high-strung. However, I just spent lots and lots of time with Caddie - she wasn't a people-bunny at first, but now she loves nothing more than snuggling and getting her head rubbed. People tell me all the time that she's more like a dog than a rabbit, and I think that's because of how much I interacted with her early on. Give Cappuccino some pats for me!

What a cutie! I love the little brown spot by the nose! I can't currently post pics of my bunny, but she is dark gray with a white tail and a white spot on her nose. She and Baxter are starting to get along a little better. Baxter desperately wants to play with her, but he doesn't quite know how or what is too much. She puts him in his place, though, when it's necessary!

I have a 10 year old rabbit named Jade, and I would post a picture of her and I but I'm too lazy to re-size the picture right now. She is white and Chablis and Jade get along wonderfully! They're so cute when Jade is running around because Chablis just follows her around sniffing her and licking her.

I wish I'd seen this post before. We have a 2 y/o black and white bunny named Mopsy. She's a sweetheart. She does ok with the dogs although she will not come out if they are in the house. They eat her hay and her poops if I'm not careful. Sandy tried to steal her veggies once. She got thumped on the nose and has tried since. We just got Mopsy a stuffed toy. For those of you with buns who have never given your bunny a stuffed toy...it's a riot. It's a fuzzy pink pig about 1/3 her size. She cuddles it, throws it...and humps it. I was told that's how they hug it. I don't know but it's alot of fun to watch her interact with it. You can tell her mood just by how she is with her piggy.

We have a mini Holland lop eared bunny. He is now 3 years old and weighs about 3-4 lbs. He will "growl" and "box" most anyone but me! He was supposed to be a she....hence his name of Honey Bun!! He is that light sable color and white little belly! I introduced Rebel to Bun the other night. Bun feels very safe in his cage and on his shelves. He will get nose to nose with Rebel that way. But, out of the cage, Rebel wants to play and Bun is not interested, so he turns on Rebel, growls and boxes and does his "air-erobics" with all four feet off the floor and then thimps when he hits the floor. Rebel just thinks its funny. Rebel will just sit outside Bun's cage and watch him...it is so funny. Bun, could care less what Reb is doing while he is in his habitat. The cage is Bun's turf. As soon as I get pics resized and figure out how to put a pic in the post...I will post of one Reb and Bun!! He is such a little doll.

One thing I found out...Rabbits get hairballs but can't puke them up...Pineapple juice helps dissove the clogs. I give Bun a piece of pineapple dried fruit (very small piece) each night. He loves it. Never had problems with hairballs or anything else. Loveable rabbit to me and will give me little kisses!!! Growls at my hubby and son! ha!

since adopting him we've discovered that he's deaf.

Our other furchild is Jasmine... my kitty!

she's going to be 11 in July.

We've not let Geddy (our Golden) meet the bunnies much yet... as I feel that she's too young and rambunctious. Why chance it.

We used to have wild rabbits in the yard, but Rusty got rid of them a long time ago.

Now Murphy and Bubba have started to clean out the squirrels and we have fewer and fewer every day....... :woofpup

I think sometimes, we are a zoo!!!

We have several Basset Hounds outside, Rebel, my golden who is outside and inside, Miss Shell, an Eastern Box turtle my son RESCUED!, and Honey Bun, who is about 4 lbs and is a Holland Lop. He loves me to death and will "kiss" me...he licks me with that itty bitty tongue. However, he will "growl" and try to box, with his little front feet, anyone who messes with his whiskers!!! Rebel would love to chase him, but he would give Honey Bun a heart attack and Max, our half golden/half chow, who is 7 years old, will get nose to nose with Bun. Bun is 3 years old. His cage is HIS domain. When I let him out to hop, when he is done playing, he is ready to go back in his cage and he hops into the room where his cage is. I have two ledges in the cage for him and he gets up there and just stretches out like a cat. He is so funny. I had him fixed when he was about 5 weeks old.

For the rabbit owners, I found something that really helps Bun. I learned that if they get a furball, they cannot throw up. A furball could kill them. Pineapple juice dissolves the hair ball. Honey Bun loves to get his apples and a piece of dried pineapple piece every night. He loves the dried fruits. I feed him Timothy hay and give him lots of toys and toilet paper rolls to chew on. It is amazing how much water the little guy can drink!! If he wants to be petted, He will nudge my hand and take his hand under my hand. He loves to have his ears rubbed and will grind his teeth in delight!!! So funny!! Our turtle is 3 years with us. My son found him upside down and "rescued him." Well after searching...he is a she. So he named her Miss Shell!! She loves apples and of course worms. She likes her warm baths and is not bashful at all. And she is fast. Bun and Shell don't mind each other at all.

Sorry so long...Bun is a little cinnamon colored with white outlines and a white belly. He looks like he has white eyeliner on. He is not much bigger than he was when I got him. I think about 4 lbs is max on the Holland Lops. Rabbits are soooooo easy to take care of!!! I have even taken Bun on a ferret leash to "walk/hop" around outside.

Rebel doesn't do very good with either pet, bunny or turtle. He wants to play with them and puts a paw on them. Rebel is about 65 lbs and a little over a year old. He is still a puppy at heart for sure.
