Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and am hoping you will share your opinions. I used the search and read about goldens with hip dysplasia, but all were younger. My dear friend has an 11 year old male. Bear's xrays show very advanced degeneration of the femur and socket. After a complete physical, bloodwork, etc. we know that he is otherwise in excellent health. Acupuncture has helped tremendously with the hip pain, but walking, getting up and lying down are getting harder for him now. He talkes glucosomine and other meds for pain have been tried.

So here's the question: Could Bear still be a good candidate for THR (total hip replacement?) The only real concern is with his age (again, he's 11 now). What age is too old? My friend loves him so and would do anything to improve the quality of his life. Your advice is appreciated! :dogbark

I'm not clear on who is recommending the THR. Suggest that your friend consult with an orthopedic specialist on this, as there are a number of surgical options, depending on the specifics of the case.

PERSONALLY, I wouldn't do it at this age. But this is strictly my opinion. The surg. is very complicated and the recovery time, in a young healthy dog, is very long. You need to consider, also, that general old dog artharitis (sp?) is kicking in at this age. Does a dog at that age have the healing capibilities that are required from this surg.? I would just keep my dog as pain-free as possible instead of putting him through something like that. But I'm sure there will be varying opinions on this topic.

Does your friend have access to a pool where he can swim? Swimming is very good and therapeutic for dogs with HD problems.
