We recently cancelled our home phone service & went w/ cell phones only. Our home service was similar in price to what we pay for three seperate cell phone lines now. Wondering if anyone else has gone strictly cell & if they are happy with it???

Wow, what an ironic post! I just cancelled our home phone and got new cells phones and switched to high speed internet, from DSL.

I'm sure you are very pleased :D with the DSL! I could never deal w/ dial up again... I would never want to go online.
I must add ........ those photos are priceless! Love them :)

We did this too when we just bought our house. Being busy we are rarely home, and so it didn't make sense to pay for a line we didn't use. We just have to watch our monthly minutes closer now. I love it this way. :029

We have both, but I have no idea why. When we bought our house in April my husband insisted that we get a house phone, so we agreed on just a line. No caller id, no call waiting b/c we didn't need it b/c everyone calls us on our cell phones. I don't know how long the phone company has a number disconnected before they give that number to someone else, but in our case it must have just been a week. We get about 12 calls a day for the same people and at least one call a week, COLLECT, from the parish jail. I guess a few criminals used to have our number. You should hear some of the messages they leave on our answering machine. Yet, he still thinks we need the phone. I think I'm just going to refuse to answer it from now on. :054

Not sure about the length of time before they give it to someone else. We use to get phone calls for the vet all the time because our #'s were so close ....... that will be someone elses prob in the future.
I sat around for months wondering why we need to have both the home phone & the cells ........ we do not, and I am so happy that we got rid of the home phone. It is so nice not to have to answer phone calls for the husband & daughter anymore because it was always for them anyway. :laugh2 :laugh2 I guess the only reason anyone would need both is for dial up internet. YUCK!

I can't envision us doing away with our home phone in the near future. We got the bill down as low as we can. Canceled the second phone line, canceled voicemail, and switched to a very reasonable long distance provider (X-Tel -- no monthly fee). Kept caller ID. We like our cell phones, but I don't like using them for long conversations. Not as comfortable for me to hold, and still not fully reliable yet.
My cell phone is more for outgoing calls than incoming. Only give my number to close friends and family. Our home phone number is part of our identity -- linked to so many things already, I'd hate to change it again. I'd rather screen calls on the house phone. Our cell plan is fairly reasonable (shared/rollover minutes). We use it for long distance, since it's a national plan. I don't even know anyone around here who relies solely on their cell phone.

a while back, our phone company charged us over $200 for calls to Maryland that we didn't make. We don't even know anyone there. We kept telling them we will not pay for it, and they said that we can't prove that we didn't make the calls. Well, after months of going back and forth, they shut off our service. We got a lawyer and everything. I didn't miss our home phone at all. We were without it for about 2 - 3 months, while our lawyer argued back and forth with the phone company, and only used our cell phones during this time.
We did eventually get our home phone back (phone company finally backed down and turned our service back on), but I could live without a home phone. We hardly ever use it anyway, mainly for long distance.

Well, it has been over a week now since we have gone strictly cells & I love it! I think my favorite part is not having to run around looking for one of the three cordless phones that my daughter always seemed to have in her room when the phone rang ! The home phone never rang for me anyway! ha, ha ! Not to mention most of them were always needing a recharge. I have also taken to using the ear piece that came w/ the cell so that I have my hands free to talk & continue to do something else at the same time. It is great! jugglex1

I don't think we could cancel the house phone anyway, because our ADT security system requires a regular phone line. Something to keep in mind, if considering the big change.
We even keep one CORDED house phone in the bedroom. It won't lose power, need recharging, or get lost. Can you tell, we're a little insecure?
Spindog, good point about the daughter hogging all the cordless sets. Happens at my house too. Guess we'll just have to get rid of the daughter and keep the phones!

Now that is good humor Mary! :laugh2
I understand the security needed in Jersey. I lived there until I was ten years old. All of my relatives that still live out there have security systems too. It is funny when they come here to visit, we often do not lock our car doors or even our house doors for that matter. They constantly are amazed at that.

We live in a pretty safe neighborhood, but having the security system gives me peace of mind, especially when we're on vacation. And we know ADT responds quickly, and the system works. Guess who set it off when we first had it installed? Good old Bonnie, our first golden! Wasn't her fault, just required the installer to make some adjustments on the motion detectors. You're lucky to feel safe enough to leave things unlocked.

Ironic..I just last night called and cutoff our house phone and switched to Roadrunner. The only reason we even got the home phone was for dialup because highspeed wasnt avail when we moved in but now we can get RR and forget dialup. It's awful. Also no one even knows my home number, only my cell. It's just as cheap for long distance with free minutes as the phone bill was so the only rise in cost will be for Road Runner but the extra $20 or so a month is well worth it especially if I work from home!!

We only have cell phones. We use Comcast cable for internet access. We didn't even consider the fact that our alarm system would no longer be monitored. I have heard you can pay for a phone line that is ONLY used for the alarm system and nothing else. Not sure how much it costs though.

Only a cell phone. As a foreigner, it is a little difficult to get a land phone in Taiwan. You need a guarantor and I dont feel comfortable asking anyone to do that, esp. since I dont know any taiwanese people well enough to ask. I do fine with just a cell, is all I need really.

We have both, but use the cells most of the time for outgoing calls. Unfortunately, nestled in a saddle between two hills, we only have cell reception at the front window...or outside aimed between the oak and tamarack trees. So incoming calls go to the landline, which we also use for dial up. We thought about getting a dish, but it would have to be placed 200 yards out in the lower pasture aimed right thru a maple tree. While that would work this time of year, come spring when the trees leaf out we'd lose the satellite.
It's frustrating because both of the huge trophy homes built below us got fiber optics run right up to them by the town...while running the extra 200 yards to our little 160 year old farmhouse would have cost us $10,000. No DSL here, either.

We still have our landline, too. And, not only do we have 7 cordless phones, we also have 5 corded ones, as well. :) My husband and I share minutes on one cellphone account and our daughter has her own cell account. Our internet is through our cable company.
I don't think we could cancel the house phone anyway, because our ADT security system requires a regular phone line. Something to keep in mind, if considering the big change.

When I moved to Cali, I wanted a home phone, thinking my family would call me on that..wrong. Everyone kept calling my cell, and ask me what the home number is, since they forgot it. At least in NJ we had different phone co. out here its one..plus they charge up the ying yang for basic stuff. I finally decided since I was getting one call a week on the home..then I should disconnect.and save money.I use the money on my cell bill now. banana

Our land line is tied into the computer and TV cable rate so I get all 3 for $129 per month. Unlimited phone. I have a cell phone thru Virgin. I paid $29 for it and put $ 100 prepaid. That lasts a year. Last year I used $82 of the $100. I only use my cell if I really need to make a call, or if I travel I use it rather than use the hotel phone. I do not even know my cell phone number! I do not turn it on unless I want to make a call and I NEVER use it while I drive.
