Not sure how to search this so I apologize if it has been discussed. How close in the bloodline can a breeder breed puppies? I am not sure I am asking this right, but in some pedigree lines I noticed that either parent may share the same grandparent or great grandparent, etc. Did that make sense? For example what if the sire of a litter has a mother named Mary and a dad named George. Say Mary and George are also the GRANDPARENTS of the Dam. I noticed scenarios like this when I was looking for ideas on pedigree names. Is that how Kennels keep good lines going? I wish I would've written some of the ones I noticed down so I could give you better examples!

My dog's sire is linebred, as are many other dogs. This is her five-generation pedigree.

You can see she is linebred on Beckwith's Malagold Flash--he appears on both sides of her father's pedigree.

Thanks for the info! I didn't know it was called line breeding. I did a search on it and found a bunch of information on the computer. The funny thing is, after I wrote the post and went back to my own dog's pedigree and read it much closer and she is also line bred! I don't know why I didn't pay attention to that before. I guess I had never heard of that and didn't know enough about breeding to even ask the breeder about that. Funny! :roll2 I didn't even really know how to read a pedigree so I guess that is why I didn't pay attention too closely. Now I know.

She doesn't appear to be, but why does that matter?

Neither of my dogs are. As to how close in a bloodline they can breed, you can breed daughter to father or brother to sister, but this is not a good thing. If you have a healthy dog,but it has a recessive trait for a disease, and you breed it to its brother/sister,then the any bad things, like diseases will probably show up in the pups, because you have two recessives.
That is kind of a simple way to explain it. Sorry if it is confusing.

After I posted I kind of figured it out. It sounds like it is good to be line bred - meaning in the same family but not directly such as father to daughter which I think is called in bred. Mine is line bred and now I can see how it is a good thing.
