What is your expoerience with this subject? Do you think it's possible to find an adult, hopefully in rescue, that is great with children? I sure hope so as that is what the standard says as far as their temperament goes ... thanks!

Hi-
I have replied on your other thread but here is an example for the question you are asking here. This link is to my local Golden Rescue and I am just giving you an example of a dog they currently have. If you read it, you will see they mention good and bad qualities. She is 9 and they say she is GReat with kids. So yes you can find an adult Golden that is good with kids. A lot of times the rescue will have a Golden that was an owner surrender due to divorce or something and the family it had belonged to had children.
here is the link for example

In the rescue I volunteer for we are very careful about which dogs go with kids. We don't allow strays to go with kids under 10 unless the pup is under a year old. It isn't because of the dog itself, they may be fine with kids, but we don't want to take a chance. We only adopt out pups and dogs that have lived with kids to familes that have young children. There are always exceptions such as dogs that are fostered by a family that has kids. We just don't want to set the dog up to possibly fail. I think most rescues try to be responsible with the dogs they adopt out, partly because of liability but also because they want to place the dog in the best situation for them to succeed.

If you teach your kids about basic dog safety and behavior, and keep the interactions minimal to start with, you'll be off to a great start.
I read an interesting book recently "Successfull Dog Adoption" by Sue Sterburg about adopting dogs. You may want to look into it, she has many suggestions, information, and 'tests' to do with possible dogs you're interested in.
Many adults are great wtih kids, be sure to give the dog some space at first, and supervise.
Hope the search goes well!
