I see many different types of Golden heads ... are there different 'types' in the breed that cause this? Can anyone refer me to a picture of the ideal Golden head?

Hi Lauralynn. Go to the following website www.grcc.net/ , click on The Golden Retriever then on Illustrated Breed Standard . This show a profile of the golden retriever standard, including the head. If you scroll down further, you will see a photo of goldens with a range of colors. Those to the left (lighter) are what some call English, and the darker American. Some English lines have blockier heads. Check this site for some examples of English lines www.englishgoldens.net/home.htm
Sorry to combine topics :)

I LOVE those blocky heads!! :cool:I prefer the slimmer heads on the females at least.
I would love to get another one that is built like Tara

I saw a female golden with the most beautiful head. It was a while ago and I cannot describe it anymore, but it was amazing. :029

I think a big blocky head on a male is just gorgeous and a thinner, more delicate head on a female is perfect. But saying that, I haven't seen a Golden I don't like. :o

I saw a website for a breeder in California that had the most massive male -- his head was beautiful! Big and blocky and he had a gorgeous coat! Just a fabulous looking dog.

Is this considered blocky?

Unless you are enterign competition for breed standard, don't worry abotu your goldens head.

However in breed conformation, the "blocky head" is desired. Females do have a slightly thinner jaw, but not by much. A really thin muzzl isn' the standard.

Then again if you are not showing, who cares. My girl and her line has the blocky heads, which is what I like. However you may not like it.

It doesn't matter for a compnion, or even to enter agility or field (however the larger muzzle will help in field).

The block head is the original lines, but different breedings lessoned it.

I wish I cold find the picture my grand father gave me of is golden that was breed from a very original line in England and was brought here. I believe it was when they breed was first accepted. They were low lyign liek soem of the standard today, but very strong in the jaw. Not that I want my dog grabbign a dead duck.

I have one blocky, and one not so blocky.. my preferrence would be the blocky head. when people meet Jaeger they usually comment on his head, and then when they see his feet, they're amazed at the size of them, as well. But his step brother goodwin, is slight of jaw, much slimmer head, for a boy, but is larger all around than jaeger. there's a lesson in genetics there somewhere.. but for companions, who really cares. ya just gotta love em all. that's why goodwin is part of our family. how could I have let him go to the shelter.. those sweet eyes,

Gryffynder: Thanks for the web links.

My Sugar has a slimmer jaw.....she's 7 months old.....will she get blockier as she gets older? I'm just curious...she isn't going to be a show dog either way. Thanks to all! :032

Sugars Mom, She will have the slimmer jaw but she is sure a good looking dog. I love all goldens but prefer the more active athletic looking ones that are around 65-75lbs. dog9

So, Duke is our first golden and of course to us he's beautiful. But, just out of curiosity, is his head blocky? You may not be able to see it sufficiently in this picture and it has done funny things to his color.

He is actually very red (which I love). He has weighed as much as 104 (TOO heavy :D - too much love) and now sits at about 85 which is ideal for him. He's very long and tall and is supposed to be pure but is not papered. Again, we don't care. I just love the look of his head and face, but was just curious about the breed's standard.

And....I agree - Ty is a very handsome lad!

He comes from a breeder in Thompson,Ct., Rockwall Goldens...she is a "show"(confirmation) breeder....both Ty's parents were Champions and 3 out of 4 grandparents were CH's and 6 out of 8 great grandparents where CH's.
But "Rockwall's My Beau Ty" as the AKC fondly calls him :happy2 was nicknamed "peanut" by the breeder because he was the "runt"....he is now 75 pure 24K golden pounds... rofl3 And has the sweetest disposition! The breeder told me he had the nicest coat out of all ten pups in the litter.

Very handsome boy, indeed. It's good to have a pedigree with recent generation champions, too. It's funny how the "runt" can grow to be large. And, he sure does have a nice coat!

Thank-you GCG....even if he did'nt have champions in his pedigree, he would still be a "Blue Ribbon Winner" to me! And I believe I speak for the majority of Golden Owners :029 :reddogx

Marty, Ty is gorgeous! I looked Rockwall up, and I see that he's a Kirby (Ch. Rush Hill's Haagen Dazs) grandson. I'm assuming he's out of Sorbet - hopefully this is correct.

Kirby was one of my favourite Goldens of all-time, and I have one of his grandsons as well. :) Kirby was a stunning dog, and known for passing on beautiful temperaments in addition to his looks and working ability.

Nice looking boy you have there!

You're right! Since the dams of both our boys are half-sisters, that would make them cousins of some sort.... Speaking of Sorbet, I have an interesting sidenote to add: I had an e-mail friend some time ago who had told me all about Sorbet's sister, Britain (who I see passed away last year :( ), back when she was being shown to her championship. And I'm pretty sure she mentioned Sorbet, too! It's amazing how even given the large number of Goldens out there, sometimes it seems like such a small world.

Cheers,

Golden Lady.....YOUR NO FOOL!! :032
WE HAVE OUR SELF A WINNER!! :ddog
Your absolutely right again... jump2 It is Cooper!!....the breeder happen to give me two 8 X 10's. One of Sorbet(I got to meet Sorbet..what a great gal) when she won her Ch and one of Cooper when he won his Ch. Ty is a definitely got the best from both his parents :dogbark :reddogx ...I can see both of them in him!

I really never expected to run into anyone who had a dog from the line. Ty's breeder is a novice(this was only her second litter) in the world of breeding but is being mentored by a experience and highly respected breeder! Our family got lucky... :485 The breeder and the mentor picked out Ty for us knowing about are circumstance and the kind of temperment I was looking for. My husband said he could'nt have ask for a better pick and I agree :doggface

That's awesome! It's great to hear that your breeder gave you such nice pics of the sire and dam, and that you really liked Sorbet. Glad to hear that Ty really is out of Cooper, too. :happy2 He just looked like he had more of Cooper's lines in him than those of the other dog Sorbet was bred to.... Sometimes all that research really does pay off! :)

I can tell you now that our guys have even more in common - they both have Ch. Tangleloft Odds on Pebwin (a.k.a. Derby) as their great-grandfather on both sides (maternal and paternal). Also, my fella's other grandfather (Ch. Sassafrass Batterys Not Incld, a.k.a. Ready) is Ty's great great grandfather - not a really close relationship, but it's there nonetheless.

If you'd like to see more on Grandpa Kirby, you can visit his site here: Kirby (http://www.rushhill.com/kirby.htm) . He was a very prolific dog; I believe he is now the top-producing (has produced the largest number of titled offspring) Golden of all time in the U.S. So "we" have a lot more family members out there than you might ever have thought.

Cheers,
GoldenLady :)
