I don't dare to call to my breeder again. But our 3 month old pup doesen't eat. We already tried all tricks.

Our breeder highly recomended Royal Canin Maxi babydog. So, Rufus didn't like it on his first day. We have tried to cheat him and put little peaces of pear or mandarines into the food. Then cheese, patty, yoghurt, chicken breast, bouillon, then water and still nothing. He dosen't eat. Today my husband bought two trialpack of wood...still nothing.

There are some days when he eating well (3 x 100g per day) Put today he hardly ate 50 g per day. All dewomings are done. All vaccinnations are done.

Is it pathological? OK, you all are more experienced then me...all suggetions are very welcome!

You might try giving him a raw marrow bone on those days when he's not eating.

I'm sorry - I can totally _not_ relate to a dog that doesn't want to eat. My Daisy is a chow hound, she'll eat anything except green peppers and celery.

Is he okay in all other respects? Energy? Stools are okay? Breathing okay? Tail wagging?

Rockne is a very finike (sp?) eater as well. I tried everything and he seems to like Nutro large breed puppy and I also give him canned food with the kibble in the morning and evening. You might want to try canned food or even white rice and ground beef (I know vets usually only recommend it when they have an upset tummy, but pups seems to really like it). But, the old saying goes- when they get hungry enough they will eat.
There are still days that Rockne doesn't eat a lot and it always worries me :( . Keep trying and you'll find something that Rufus (i love that name!) likes

Actually he had a temperature (39 C) 2 days ago and he still a little weak but his stools are OK.

Now we cut his food little pieces of tomato and he gorged as crazy!? And so everyday...we must think something new for him. He likes even onion-only not his granules

I would take him in to your vet and have him examined. He may be ill or their may be some other type of issue. Your vet should be able to tell. He may want you to bring in a stool sample and run some tests. It definitely wouldn't hurt.

Beyond that, you can try to entice him in many ways, but as cruel as it sounds, he will eat when he is hungry (be it there is no other issue re: health, which is reason I suggested vet first) He will not let himself starve as long as you are offering him fresh clean water and food daily.

I do know people who have offered frozen Bil-Jac to get their dogs to eat and it works wonders. The dogs love it. Good luck!

Please don't feed your dog onions, Rufus. A little bit is okay, but I believe onions are toxic for dogs if consumed in large quantities.

How do you feed your dog? By that I mean, do you put the food down for a set time (say, 10 minutes). You should try doing that, then taking it away once the time expires. Hopefully your pup will learn to eat when he's hungry, or not eat at all.

I wouldn't entice him with "extras" in his food. That could leave you with a very finnicky eater.

Good luck with it! :003

Hi Rufus.

Have your puppy vet checked to make sure there are no medical issues; a puppy this age should be eating his food.

Watch the treats and between meal snacks! For the time being, just give him his normal food rations at the same times each day. And lets see where we go with that. If you are just giving him dry commercial food, add a little bit of water and sir well, also you may want to briefly heat the food to make it smell more appealing to the dog.

Good luck.

Onions are a no no, they have a toxin that can affect dogs, so please don't give him anymore onions. I would change his food, if he doesn't like it, then why stick it to him with a tease of tomatoes or whatever food.

My GR is not an eater either. We almost lost him after he was fixed because he quit eating and drinking. I always thought that GR had weight problems, but mine is so skinny! I have found that if I change foods often (every 3 weeks), and give him nutritious snacks, he will gain weight back.
The vet said that he is a very healthy dog, even if he is a bit thin. He does like his walks!

Could it just be that you are feeding him too much so he is hungry at some times, but then is fine not to eat for a while?

Hi Rufus
I too had a pup (now 8 year old Maltese) who didnt like food. The vet suggested that I give him boiled chicken and rice. He takes that but now, he doesnt like dog food  The vet also gave me some appetite increaser to feed him.

My GR initially didnt like his food (Science Diet) :o . So after asking around I mixed his food with Blackwood. He wolfed down everything and put on weight. Now I'm putting him on Innova, he's still eating well.

I guess u might have to change his food - ask shops for sample packs to see which one Rufus likes. All the best!!

I just read that Vitamin B can stimulate appetite. I don't normally recommend supplementation for growing puppies but if you're concerned your puppy isn't getting enough to eat, you might try the Vitamin B. Just a thought...
