View Full Version : What shade is considered "medium"?

I was wondering what "honey colored" means when referring to a puppy's coat shade and "medium" gold as an adult shade. Whose Goldens would represent those colors here on the forum out of curiosity? I just wanted to see an example.

Thanks! :dogbark

Mikey and Maddie are both considered "light" golden - they look "honey" to me!! (sorry - I havent mastered the posting of photos on this site! I can never get it right) - but maybe you can tell from my Avatar???

Actually the photo of all the dogs above shows the CKC acceptable variations in coat color. I do believe, but correct me if I am wrong, that the AKC does not accept the cream color which is the 1 (or 2) dogs on the far left. I would consider the middle 3 dogs to be medium golden. It is so hard to tell from a puppy's coat what color they will be as an adult, although ear's are a good indication. So perhaps people are referring to the puppy coat as honey because they are generally lighter in color when they are young, and their coat color deepens as they age. I just love the top photo showing both ends of the spectrum; what beautiful dogs! Gryffyn is considered a light golden, although that may change yet as his coat is not fully developed.

Chris, what beautiful pictures. That is my dream. If I had my life to do over again. Give me that big yard and all those Goldens. I would be a happy person.

My Beau would be between the 3rd and 4th from the right. This morning, in the sunlight, he was shining just like a brand new penny!

Abbey would be 3rd from left. But our friends Golden is 4th from left colour & they tell me Lucy looked like Abbey when she was young, so Abbey may get darker. Her ears are not golden at all, they are a "dirty blonde"!! :laugh2

I love all colours!

Blaze has a friend Jake 6mths old who is white, what a nice dog I've never seen one that white before.

I've always thought a Golden Retriever was
"golden" not red or white, wow have I ever learned alot about how different they can be all as sweet as the next. :dogbark

Blaze is dark honey?

I tried to show a close up, it shows his true colour.
If I'm wrong, please tell me. Nothing wrong more education about our kids...

Thanks, lorie

As for the original question, I'd say that the three dogs in the middle of that row of Goldens are all medium gold. I'd call the third one from the left "light gold".

GoldenBlaze, I think your term of "dark honey" sounds about right. :) These terms are all subjective - there's no official way of identifying the range of colours that we see in Goldens, so however we each choose to describe our own kids work for me. All of mine have been well within the middle range of the spectrum, and I just refer to them "medium gold". Though I admit I have a real soft spot for the redder Goldens as well. :happy2

Bailey would be 3rd from the left I guess. But as he's only 7 months, he might change some. I know the tip/last couple inches or so of his tail is definately darker than the rest of him. I knew to look at the ears for an idea of the color - but does anyone else have a dog with a darker tip to his/her tail?

Harley would be 3rd from left too. A lot of people thought she was a yellow lab when she was younger (after she lost her puppy fuzz & before her "feathers" grew in!)

I love those pictures, I haven't seem them before!

Blaze would be the third from the right. I call him a 'dark gold' (he is registered as light...because he was as a pup...they all are...).

It can even depend on the lighting for the coloring...in brigher light they look lighter, and the less light the darker they are.

Great question!

The second pic is great! Shows all the shade variations. I would say that the middle ones are the medium color or "honey colored". I can handle that! :-) Thanks! ;)

Wow--I was thinking he was a "lighter" medium. Hmmm...maybe it's just my computer. :-)

I think we are getting confused, I think MY Blaze is lighter med as shows in the picture. 4th from left .

Westin yes I agree light med I'd say same as BLaze.

theGoldenPup's, Blaze I have not seen a picture of . Are we confusing the two boys with the same name? :dogbark :dogbark
