I just got a golden retriever puppy, Linus. He is 8 weeks old. He was on Purina Puppy Chow at the breeder and I gradually switched him over to Iams Large Breed Puppy. His eyes are now beginning to have discharge...should I switch his food again? Has anyone had this problem with Iams?

I'd check with a vet because at that age you don't want to be fooling around with the puppy's eyes. It could be allergies as well either from the food or from dust, pollen or other environmental allergens.

I had a terrible experience with Iams with one of my cats. I think the quality is not where it used to be years ago. You might check the database on other food options. We fed Nutro Large Breed Puppy. I'm not sure what other large breed options are out there. Some folks just start off with an adult formula.

Thanks...the vet said to try triple antibiotic ointment and to watch him for a few days!

Linus' Mom;

I suggest you check the food data base on this site,checking ingredients and peoples' experiences. Too much corn and many other ingredients are in most dog foods. Our breeder feeds the raw BARF diet but also recommends Innova or Wellness kibbles along with yogurt, some raw meat and vitamins.

Our last goldie had severe allergies of all kinds and I am being careful this time. Will change from BARF to Innova gradually.

Iams, Science Diet, Purina, Eukanuba, Beneful...it's all garbage. Any food that lists corn, any kind of "by-product" or animal digest is garbage. Do the research...there are much better brands of food available out there at Petco, Canine Commissary, etc., and while they seem more expensive they're really not. You can feed less food because they're more nutritious.
