Maddie sure doesn't like fireworks!!! I brought her outside thinking if she saw them - she would be ok - ummmmmmmm that would be a big NO!!! She couldn't run in the house fast enough!! She kept pacing - from the living room to the kitchen to her mat to near her crate to back in the living room.
Great..... guess that means she's gonna freak out during thunderstorms too??? :204
So how do YOUR pups like fireworks??

Poor Maddie!
Our two don't mind the fireworks (or storms). We were concerned about this because our first dog HATED both with a passion.
Last 4th of July was their first. Our golden retriever Whipper really didn't pay them any mind. Our choc lab Cocoa sat there and actually watched all the colors exploding; she was cool about it! :)
This year they've barked at a couple of the bangs, but other than that haven't really paid them much attention.

Lucky didn't mind the fireworks until they set the ones off that made the real shrill sound followed by a bunch of cracks.:eek Then he was done. He didn't even mind the ones with the loud boom but those shrill ones freaked him out. He ended up in the house too.:916

Cayenne is very funny about fireworks. She got a bit agitated and barked at the big ones.
Thunder did great for his first time, he just streched out on the blanket and chilled and watched them! His loved the big thundercrakers that shook the ground, he would start wagging his tail really hard.
We saw alot of goldens in the crowd! :032

My fur baby is not normal. He sat there watching the sky light up like it was nothing but refuses to get in the swimming pool even with me in it. I have never seen a golden so unsure of the water. Does anyone else have a golden that paces around the pool but won't get in?

Bianka does great around fireworks, the only time I worry is when I can't be home with her if their going to be let off like tonight:rolleyes
I just worry that she will react differently without me their and I don't like taking that chance.
How old is Maddie:204

We don't have fireworks here, we have to drive out to the little airport to see them. But every year on this weekend he have a bunch of Hot air balloons that come and land around our houses. Everyone stands outside to watch. They come both Friday and Saturday. Well Charlie didn't like those! Charlie has never tried to run away, whenever he wants in he either stand at the door and looks in or scratches at it and he's immedietly let in. Well yesterday I let him out to do his buisness then went to watch the t.v. for a little bit. Well bad, bad, mommy that I am I didnt' even think about the balloons bothering him. Well the phone rings and a lady is on the other end asking me if I own a dog named Charlie. So my poor guy was so panicked with fear that he either scaled our fence or got out the front while the kids were in and out looking at the balloons. He was about a mile and a half down the road hiding under there oak tree. So I went and picked him up. As soon as he saw the truck he ran out from under the tree and jumped on in. He has one nail on his back paw that got tore up good enough to bleed. I cleaned him up and we all had to love on him non stop for the rest of the day. I still feel so bad. So this morning I went out with him to pee, he ran right back in the house, straight to our room and jumped up on our bed. So not sure about fireworks, but I'm thinking if the Hot Air Balloons scare him the fireworks will to!

Poor Charlie, sounds like he had quite a scare. Those ballons are so darned big they can be really intimidating coming in or taking off. We have a school yard near our home where they lauch all those darned things all weekend long. I try not to walk our dogs when they are launcing them. :\

Well I sure learned my lesson. I was suppose to take him on a little pet parade they have hear every year to. I slept in so decided not to go. Good thing I didn't, don't think he would of done to well. I'll have to mark it on my calendar "No dogs outside" next 4th of July morning. :021

I took Ginger to fireworks once a few years ago. She had not minded the sound of the ones around our house. When they started, she didn't seem to think it was a big deal, but then she started looking at them and she got a little nervous. The thing is-- as soon as I turned her around (facing away from them) she was fine!! I guess the bright lights just bothered her...
It's odd though, 2 years or so after that she seemed more nervous around fireworks-- if we heard some going off (amateur) while we were on a walk, she'd jump (of course- I did too!) And last week while we were at a park, someone decided to fire off one of those ones that spins and changes colors fairly close to us... Ginger was staring at the thing, really interested- until it went BANG! And then she jumped away and had her tail down for the next few minutes :(
I don't get why she'd be scared now when she wasn't for a long time? The only thing I can think is maybe the amateur ones scared her because they are sudden and more unexpected. :204

I wouldnt recomend taken a dog to see fireworks. there hearing is much more sensitive than a humans and it could couse some hearing problems. I know my ears were ringing after watching the fireworks in boston, i could just imagen what a dogs ears would be doing.

Poor baby Charlie:( I have heard Collett they will run right in the road because they are just terrified of some of those noises they just don't hear everyday and even get a chance to get used too. Hope Charlie is doing better today:)
It's odd though, 2 years or so after that she seemed more nervous around fireworks--
CC, I'm going through the same thing here right now with Bianka, all of a sudden now for some odd reason she is reacting to these situations differently.:( She has been around them from day 1 of coming to us. On the 4th of July my son took her too the parade, she of course got lots of compliments but brought her right home cause he said she was having a major anxiety attack:415 Fireworks don't bother her a bit though if I am home with her, she just lays down by me in here at the computer. But, not sure now how she does with me not here cause I came in late Friday night and she was limping so bad she could barely put weight on the leg:( that was caused most likely by neighbors either setting off some major fireworks or someone pounding at the door...she goes excitement crazy if someone knocks on the door.
GoldenBlitz- My neighbors I found out were setting them off pretty heavy Friday night, Big ones too since we found the leftovers on the road. This probally did hurt my girls ears, or just terrified her with me not here. I should have just stayed home with her and never went:(

Yeah, isn't it odd? I just don't get it...
Ginger doesn't seem to mind fireworks at all when she's at home though. Lots of people were setting them off around here the whole week, and she just ignores them. We were gone for a while on the 4th, and when we came home she acted normal... Of course we could hear my terrier Pooch barking from a block away! :rolleyes He just HAS to bark at every noise!

Thanks Goldenlover, yes Charlie is doing better. He'll be waaaaaaay better tomorrow since today was the LAST day for the Balloons. I thought yesterday was till I was awaken by the big beasts!! Ha Ha, poor Charlie has just been a nervous wreck 3 mornings in a row. He will be visiting the groomer on Wednesday I'll have to warn her about his nails and let her take care of them. I'm afraid to go near them for fear of hurting him. They look awful though.

Champmom, how old is your golden? My Daisy didn't feel comfortable in lots of water until she was a full 1-1/2 years. It was a lame duck in the pond that enticed her out and showed her that she could swim.
As for fireworks, Daisy hides in the bathtub :b
Collett -- poor Charlie!!! And a good lesson for all of us. Best not to leave our dogs alone outside when we know there's going to be loud noises. Charlie's a trooper though--how high was your fence that you think he might have scaled?

Good time of year to bring this issue up to the top :)
If your dog is afraid of fireworks and you're thinking a little invivo conditioning will help (desensitizing by exposure)...make sure you have a strong collar and a good grip on the leash. Frightened dogs can bolt very easily, and like Collett pointed out, sometimes do things you can't possibly imagine them doing -- like jumping a fence.

WO! What a surprise to see MY name to an old post!!!! :lol
Actually - a year has passed since this last post - 4th of July WILL be quite interesting.......... some time last month - we had a wicked thunderstorm with hail roll on through........... ever since then Maddie FREAKS at thunderstorms........... she paces and pants and pants and paces back and forth - back and forth - and CRY - OMG - does she cry!!!!! That thunderstorm lasted for like three days and every night Maddie had to come sleep with Mommy and Daddy!!
We had a storm just the other night - she probably would have been fine had I not had to go into the kitchen to shut the window ............ so she cried and I let her into my room.
Every time she hears fireworks and perks up and is like "what was that? is that thunder??"

Two years ago New Year's Day I was going to discount store 6 miles up the road in another town I saw an old golden crossing the highway between the grocery store and my church here in this small town. On way back i stopped at grocery store and there she was in the parking lot. I told manager in side and he said the dog had been there all morning. When I came I just spoke to her and looked for ID tag--none, just rabies tag. Well, I guess she took me for a dog lover because she followed me to the car and when I opened the door, she jumped right in. So I took her home with me.
Nothing I could do that day as it was Ne Years Day, but next morning I called vet and gave the rabies tag number, and info as to where the dog was, etc, and soon after I got the call. Her name was Pixie, she was 11, and she was terrified of fireworks. Owners let her out about 9:00 New Years Eve, thinking it was to early for fireworks, but someone did set some off and she bolted. They had driven around that night and all day looking for her. Where I found her was 3 miles from where she lived. Owner came and got her and it was so great seeing the love between the two. Found out this was the 2ed time she had bolted on hearing fireworks, but was found soon after the first time. So I guess if you have a yard the dogs can escape from it is best to take them out to do business on a leash if ther is any chance of early fireworks. And no, none of my dogs are scared of them.

Well, I guess this should be a learning experiance with Kacey, this Sunday will be her first time experiancing fireworks so we'll see. I am taking her with me to a Family bar-b-que on Saturday and some of the younger kids are likely to have fireworks. I hope she is okay with them. She doesn't seem to be bothered by loud noises. I don't think it is has rained in Phoenix since she was born 14 weeks ago so I have nothing to compare to.

Well, my girl experienced her first fireworks tonight.
She was not pleased. :cry
The first few test booms she just sort of perked her ears up and said ... "Hey, mom, what's that?"
As soon as they started the show she was in my lap like jumpin' jack flash, gashed my face with her claws and cried so hard. I couldn't get her into the house fast enough, at which point she couldn't decide which bed to hide under! Took twenty minutes for the heavy panting and whimpering to stop then she crashed hard, poor thing.
No more fireworks for my pup!!! :rollin

Actually Maddie did rather well this year - she did "watch" them - didn't really care too much for the loud ones - but tolerated rather well - AND - when the door opened to go in - she bolted quicker than I could say "Maddie come"
HA! HA! HA! no coaxing HER in the house that night.
Thunderstorms on the other hand are a different story!!
Well our Jake is one of a kind. He's our official Fire Safety Dog. We've never taken him along to a commercial display, so I don't know how he'd react to the big ones. But whenever we light a few small ones in the driveway, he's right there protecting us. He runs up to them as soon as they stop and begins to roll on them and step on them to put them out. We have to watch him very carefully to avoid any potential burns. It's hilarious though... he looks at us like "What the heck did you do that for? Now I have to go put it out!" :laugh2

Berr tolerates them, Shaker hates them (under the bed or in the bathtub) and they make the cat constipated.

Madison dislikes thunder and fireworks...will admit she has mellowed some ..think she has begun to trust us and stays close to hubby or I ..she can sense thunder but fireworks are a great surprize to her when they go off and she barks every time...I make it a point to be with her doing these times and all goes well..but..I also had a friend that lost a dog that ran off during firework time..Madison will never be alone outside from now thru the Fourth of July...nah..we don't spoil her...Jan and Madison
