Doc just turned 2 years old on June 10th. For the past week or so, he's been hesitant to jump on our bed. He usually loves jumping on our bed, and waits for the moment to do so everynight, and morning. Now, he acts like he wants to jump on the bed, and tries to , but struggles with his paws like hes using his arm strength to get on, but can't. He WONT jump. And when he does jump, he cries or whines as he barely makes it on the bed. I don't' see a noticeable limp or anything. He does kinda of run funny, but I can't explain it. Any suggestions on what can be happening here? Or what to do? Can he take Ibuprofen, tylenol, or advil???

The problem might be due to his back rather than his legs. There wouldn't be a noticeable limp if that was the case...just discomfort when attempting certain movements

What are you waiting for???
The dog can't tell you wants wrong!!
Get Doc into the vet!!!!!!
Get some xrays done and get some answers. That's not right that after two years, all of a sudden he won't jump!!!!
The vet only let Henry have buffered aspirin, if we had to take something for pain!
Keep in touch.

yes I would take Doc to the vet for a check over something must be wrong.if he cant get up there something is not right.
I would only give medication that your vet has said to give him .You will have to find out the problem first.
please let us know what happens

Do NOT feed him Ibuprofin or Tylenol -- even small doses they can cause deadly liver problems. Take him to a vet to rule out anything physical, then if there's nothing there, look for behavioral reasons.

If it's he's knee (s) there wouldn't be a noticable limp at first if there's a slight tear in either his crucia ligament or his miniscus.
Please get him to the vet - I didn't and will be eternally sorry for #1) letting Duke suffer for so long (they're so stoic and they can't tell you!) & #2) unless he has a divine healing which I'm praying for, he'll be lame the rest of his life because I didn't take him in right away. He has and will suffer needlessly because I didn't pay close attention when I first thought I detected a limp last summer.
You can follow our story on "Crucia Ligament Tear" in this forum. Good luck and let us know.

So, Docster - How's everything? How's Doc doing? Did you take him to the vet or did it work itself out?
You know, I have another thought. I had an Aussie pup one time that started limping at I'd say 6 months. Not real noticible, but enough.
Took him straight away to the vet and it was growth plate bruises. Kept him quiet for a couple of weeks and he was as right as rain. I just wish Duke's problems were that easily solvable.
Good luck and please do let us know.

Thanks for your replies!! I have not been on the forum since I posted. Well, we haven't taken Doc to the vet yet, but we definitly will. How much do x-rays cost? Not that it's a problem, just trying to figure out how much it would be. I'm just so worried what it could be. We thought we'd wait it out a while, but he is still crying when he jumps on the bed. He runs pretty fast still, just kinda funny. Other than that he seems totally normal, thats why its so strange. I'll keep ya'll updated when we go to the vet.

DO you take Doc for rides in the car? What kind of car?
Our Old Elliot started exhibiting wining after jumping in and out of the car...a GMC Jimmy...he pulled his chest/leg muscles! It took weeks for the soreness to go away.
I'd go to the Vet too. I never figure I can get out of the vets for less than $250, for a normal visit...I bet it will be 2 - 3 x' that to get x-ray's...but I really don't know...call the vet and ask...$$ spent now may prevent $$$$$$$ spent later, not to mention the pain on poor Doc!
Keep us posted!

I certainly hope he is doing well and its not HD. Please keep us updated!!!!!
I've found that different vets charge differently. Rusty just had a full series of xrays completed. I don't know all the terminology but it included pictures of front legs and shoulders from three angles, spine and hind legs also three angles. It run me 275.00 for the pictures. For the number of films I didn't think this was too bad. The xrays had to go to two radiologist as my vet wanted more than his opinion. Haven't seen a bill for this, the vet said they may not charge me, if they do it will probably be 50.00 a peice. Keep in mind I didn't include the CBC, office visit, consult and then picked up our monthly heartwork preventative.
I sure hope everything goes ok. I know what it's like to worry!

Sorry for the late reply again. Well, the vet did a bunch of exercises with his legs, and apparently he's not letting her know what hurts. He even let her stretch his legs all the way back with no pain it seems. When she watched him run, she could tell he ran a little funny, like he was trying to protect his right back leg. She gave us 5 days of anti-inflammatories to take and it's been over 5 days already. Hes doing a lot better, but he will jump on the bed now only if you help him. He doesn't cry anymore, but I'm wondering if he is psychologically scared of jumping now. Or he just loves getting some help on. The crazies thing I saw him do a couple of days ago was leap over the side of our couch when a visitor came in and he hadn't done that in a long time but yet he still refuses to jump on the bed. The vet said that if he continued to have pain and problems, then we can take him in for an x-ray. She just wanted to see if the anti inflammatories worked first. We also bought some glucosamine chews OH yeah, she even said he didn't have any knee problems by feeling them. DUring the visit, Doc also got his anal glands expressed and they were really full and we just got them expressed 2 weeks prior. He did seem to feel better after that too. DOc is just not telling us anything still. He seems better though. Does anyone have a ramp for their golden?
Glad to hear Doc is better. It's frustrating when there's no diagnoses. Thats pretty much the way it was with Rusty.
I don't have a ramp but seriously considering getting one. I hoist this 72 pound dog up into the suv and down everytime. I know I"m going to need one soon as my older dog is showing signs of stiffening joints. I'm holding out for a little while though. Eventually I'll need it if not for the dog...for me!!! LOL

Thanks for answering, I've been wondering how things went. Glad he feels a bit better. Ramps are good, used a plank for old Elliot when I could not lift his butt into our Jimmy.
Keep us up-dated…or well ask! Thanks! Good Luck! --Tailer’sMom
