We rescued Gretzky yesterday from a local GR rescue. Behaviorally, he is doing really well. I am really concerned about his health however. His former owner said that he was healthy and up to date on everything, but I am not so sure. He has this shaky leg thing and it doesn't seem to be nervousness. He drinks a ton of water. I posted about the shaky leg on the health board, so if anyone has any ideas let me know.

This is a hard situtation. I have never adopted from a rescue before and I don't like not knowing his background. I also hate thinking that his former owner knew something might be wrong with him, but lied to the rescue. I mean, be responsible. Even if something is wrong with him, the rescue will take him and find someone who can take care of him! But they need to know up front so that he can find the perfect "forever" home. I love this dog already, and I don't know what I will do if he has a serious illness. Anyway, thanks for letting me vent. Hopefully, things will work out ok.

Thanks for "listening."

Denalipup-
First off- Congrats on your rescue puppy Gretzky! :029 We also have a rescue, Sundance, he is 3 1/2 now. We love him dearly, and could not have asked for a better dog. I saw your post on shaky legs, and it really could be anything. Let the vet check for movement in his back legs. Gretzky may just be growing and a little unstable. He may not be used to a lot of exercise. Unfortunately for us, our puppy is having a TPO tomorrow and his problem started out in a very similar way. The good news is that no matter if there is a problem or not, you are on top of it and concerned about his health. If there is a problem, most can be fixed. :) Also, my dogs drink water all day long, it is hot here and they play hard. If you just got him from the shelter, he may be slightly dehydrated. If you can pull his skin away from his body easily, he may be dehydrated. Just keep plenty of water around and he'll balance out. Remember to let the vet know that he is drinking alot of water, just in case it's something else. Good luck with Gretzky, and keep us informed on how he is doing.

Thanks for your reply, waterabbit. Luckily, according to the vet, Gretzky has "excellent" hips and "is more fit than most people." He thinks that Gretzky is just a nervous dog that didn't have a very good past. He is a very healthy dog and extremely muscular which has something to do with why he was drinking so much water. He is doing really well here so far.

How did your puppy's surgery go?

Good news about Gretzky! Going to the vet, if nothing else, I'm sure gave you some peace of mind.

Denalipup,

Congrats on your new addition. Hang in there. When I adopted Seamus he was an incredibly nervous dog. He had been a stray on the streets of the Bronx in NY and God knows what he'd been through. He was scared of his own shadow and everyone else's too. The first week or two he did some weird things. He was very skittish. He was also terrified of men with mustaches. He would also pee everytime I bent over to attach his leash to his collar. It was really sad.

But, these guys are resilient. They bounce back quick with just a little love. Seamus now doesn't exhibit any of those things that made we worry at first. Your pup is probably just trying to figure out what's going on. He doesn't yet know that he hit the doggie lottery and now has a loving home that's for good. So, hang in there. Let us know in a week or two how he's doing. I bet it will be a lot better.
