We were advised that giving aspirin too Bianka is ok if needed. She is limping on that right front leg that was x-rayed months back and they were checking for OCD I believe it was. She didn't have that though.
We had told them she had gotten her foot caught by a chair when she heard a noise and jumped up and that is when she hurt the leg. Well, it is acting up again or she is using it more due to the back leg problem she has or my best guess is she has been playing with Stormy alot and I think it may be too much for her.

Anyway, we gave her 1/2 aspirin tonight, she seems ok, but have been watching her all night.

Buffered aspirin in quantities appropriate for the dog's size should be OK. Check with your Vet (I'm assuming you did Dianna) for the right amount for your dog.

Yes it was our vet that said she could have an aspirin if needed, this was when we took her in for the back leg problem. But now its the front leg thats giving her more of a problem then the back leg:(

But I know aspirin can be hard on a humans stomach so I just wanted to make sure I am not causing any bigger problems with her, she sure don't need anymore problems then what she already has.

Yes Swampcollie, our vet did say she could have aspirin for her back leg if need be and if we felt she was in pain. She was doing fine so none was ever needed. But now its the front leg and she was limping pretty good this morning on it but she has been rough housing with Stormy an awful lot.

I just wanted to know what others thought, I don't want to cause a stomach problem with her, she sure doesn't need another problem. She has already had her share of them.

Did they check her elbows when they looked for OCD?

Dianna,
One buffered asprin, 325 mg, is safe for a 40 lb dog. I always give with food and/or yogurt when I give asprin. Even with food, asprin can still upset the stomach in some dogs. I hope that Bianka is feeling better soon.

Thanks for the info on this aspirin question, I always feel better coming too you all about it. I guess I just trust you all so much because I know you love these goldens as much as I do.

As far as that x-ray goes Swampcollie, they couldn't find anything wrong with the leg and told me it was up too me to run the x-ray to be sure, they said a puppy her age at the time apparently would get this so that is why they were looking their but the x-rays showed good. They never said anything to me about checking the elbows. I am wondering now if those same x-rays would show anything on the elbows....probally not huh....:rolleyes

Hello, I wanted to reopen this post to see if anyone had anything new to say.

Barley was limping this morning and I went to the store to buy him Ascriptin (recommended on another post) which is 325 mg of aspirin buffered with Maalox. The main ingredient in Maalox is magnesium hydroxide (as written on Ascriptin box) which is recommended in my vet book for dogs with indigestion. I guess this is to help the tummy feel better when taking aspirin. The vet book also said that you should give the dog coated or buffered aspirin (rather than plain) because it is easier on the stomach. So I guess that this Ascriptin qualifies since it is buffered. I do know that long term use is not recommended. Oh yeah, by the way the vet book dosage for aspirin is 5 mg per pound of dog. For my dog who is 75 lbs that would be 375, so one 325 mg pill should be just right...

Anyone have any other comments? Anyone ever use Ascriptin or Aspirin for that matter? Is something else better to take?

Regarding Barley he was fine last night, and then this morning did not want to put any weight on his foot. I shaved his paw but did not see anything. It seems to be his paw that hurts. Not in a particular spot either but his whole paw. I am thinking he slept on it wrong, or maybe he got stepped on... We will see when I get home how he is doing. If no better in a few days off to the vet we go :( I hate those trips...

I've used buffered aspirin a bit with my terrier when his hip was bothering him (on advise from my vet.)
I just wanted to say if you do, keep an eye on the dog and call your vet if you notice anything unusual. Some dogs are sensitive to aspirin...

My terrier was given Etogesic after he had hip surgery, and we later found out that he is probably sensitive to this-- at the time he was acting very laid-back and calm which I thought was due to the surgery except when we finished the Etogesic he started acting like his usual self (usually very active)... Later the vet said that it was most likely the Etogesic had been affecting him badly and that we shouldn't use it anymore (that's when they recommended buffered aspirin.)

Hello again,

Well I wanted to add that I just got off the phone with my vet and he said for my 75 lb dog he should be getting 2 380 mg Ascriptin tablets twice daily for his limp. He said 1 tablet would not do anything. So I guess then it would be about 10mg per pound.

Edit: I know my previous post said 325 mg, but the vet said 380 mg so thats what I put here.
