Help....anyone...Sam has just come home, he will be 7 weeks old this coming Tues. (Today is Sat.) Since coming home at 5pm yesterday he has only been drinking water. I had hoped that by today (lunch time) he would have taken an interest in his food. The breeder had been feeding the pups dry kibble ..they have been weaned from their mom for about 2 weeks. I am trying to feed him Performatrin Ultra it is an all natural dry food..it is (Canadian) primarily lamb and brown rice.
I have tried softening it to help him chew but he still will only take a few kibbles and then goes back to his water. Am I worrying too soon?...Is it because it is so hot?...An adjustment issue? I would rather worry too soon than too late! It has been a long time since I had Golden Puppies...someone please help ...
Thanks...Sam and his Mom

Heat will definitely affect a dog's appetite. How hot is it? Do you have air conditioning?
Adjustment can also affect appetite.
I wouldn't worry just yet. His appetite will pick up as he gets accustomed to his new home and family.
Is he playing? How's his mood?

Has the pup been dewormed? If not, take him in to the vets.
Otherwise, some pups are under a lot of stress when they move to their new homes, and might be reluctant to eat, although I admit, this is probably an exception and not a rule.
If at all possible, feed what the breeder was feeding; break the total amount of food into 3 small meals per day. Also, some pups have a hardtime chewing kibble, so you might want to soften it up a little to make it easier for him to chew.
It's possible that other people in your household are giving your pup treats and other food, so you will need to watch for this.
When your puppy gets comfortable with his new home and is on a regular feeding schedule, then you can convert to some other brand of food, if you wish.
The high priority right now, is to get your puppy stabilized in his new home.

Hi Jo Ellen and JohnWa
Thank you both for your prompt replies. Thankfully the problem is now resolved. I wasn't softening his food enough...so I heated the water and softened his food ..cooled it off and Voila!! He ate it up..well most of it..which is good because I didn't want his little tummy to overfill now.
I Thank you both for your insight. Jo Ellen..the house is pretty cool and his mood is wonderful,..playful, sleeping through his first night...a big WOW there...huh...
JohnWa..yes he has been de wormed and I am solely responsible for his tummy, so there weren't any in between meal snacks .. he was / is overall very content...and that is why I was a little concerned...Both of you were very helpful in alleviating my concerns...Thank you both very much
Sam's Mom...oh yes...and Sam too!!
