We are looking for a new puppy. I am reading alot of post about heath clearances on this board. Not to sound dim or anything but..what are the official titles of these clearances, and what is the official name for each of them?
If a breeder does have all the clearance certificates, what do I look for on them.
Thanks for any help :)

Hi,

All breeding dogs should have the following clearances:

From the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, www.offa.org (http://www.offa.org) ):

Hips (checking for dysplasia)
Elbows (checking for dysplasia)
Heart (for genetic cardiac defects)
Thyroid (to check thyroid function)

From Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF, www.vmdb.org/history.html (http://www.vmdb.org/history.html) ):

Eyes (certified free of cataracts and other genetic disorders- must be rechecked every year).

I have included links to the websites, which will give you detailed information on all the clearances.

Those sites were really good I learnt things I never knew about hip displaysia, etc. but now I am worried about my pup having to have his tests because I am scared they might hurt him but I think I am worrying for no reason.
Thanks.

No need to worry, X-rays are taken after pup has been given a sedative so he or she will be totally relaxed. The CERF exam (eyes) is no more than putting drops into eyes to dialate the pupils, than doc has a look. Very similar to a human exam.
