Hi everyone in just a few weeks i will begin my search for a golden pup of my own. Im leaning toward a female. I hope to be working in a correctional facility soon and was wondering if anyone knows about using dogs for the detection of narcotics. How much training is involved and such. my pup is gonna be a family pet, but i am interested in possibly getting it trained for this purpose later on, so it would be valuable if i can get some information from someone. My family had a golden when i was younger, and I have always wanted one of my own. Im not sure if using a golden for narcotics detecion is a good idea or not and would like to know what peeps think about it. If its not a good idea than I would be perfectly content to having my golden as my companion. I have spent lots of time looking at other peoples post and to tell you the truth I am very anxious to get my pup. Of course I am waiting so that I can have everything ready for my little pup! Anyways I will post picks and update you when I get her. :grwag

The golden retriever is indeed capable of being trained as a narco dog. In fact, some police depts swear by them. I also know that goldens are used at border points, to sniff incoming vehicles for specific types of contraband. But it is by no means the only breed used for such matters. I'm including a few site references for you. If you would like more, simply do an Internet search for narcotics dog training.
