Hi all

Listen, a member of my retriever club told me that "Head and Shoulders" shampoo was the best shampoo to use especially on Goldens. I tried it on Buddy and WOW.....I was asked if Buddy was a show dog! hahahahahahahahaha....if they only knew!!!! hahaha:woofpup That is how wonderful his fur looked....even looked thicker. PLUS...it is much cheaper than grooming shampoo!!! One more thing....Buddy NEVER had any sort of allergic reaction to it...as a matter of fact, the dry areas around his elbows got much better. Give it a try and let me know what you think!! ( smells sweet too! :banana ...good luck!

im very interested in hearing about this. other people have said that human shampoos tend to dry out your dog's skin... so i wonder how long your dog has been using the shampoo, and if you would keep me informed as to any gradual changes that might arise.

Danny - (always looking for a cheaper/ better alternative)

Head and Shoulders and Selsum Blue are sometimes recommended even by vets for dogs with certain skin issues.

Hi Danny

So far, it has been fantastic for Buddy! I have been using it for quite awhile, although, I *try* not to bath Buddy too much. Sometimes, in the summer though, it is hard as he seems to jump in *anything* that resembles a lake!!! This includes mud puddles! So far, the head and shoulders has been the best I have used and I have spent quite a bit on salon shampoos...there is one expensive one...it has oatmeal and baking soda in it...this doesnt hold a candle to the head and shoulders!! Give it a try and tell me what you think!!

That's because the anti-dandruff shampoo will not dry out the dog's skin (it is designed to make people's scalp/hair more oily/not dandruffy.

Do you think this would apply to ANY dandruff shampoo?? :415

i am curious about trying this as My 7 mos old golden girl has either decided to be allergic to grass or weed or something she has come into contact with and has these little red whelts like that have broken out on her then just dry out and peal away. I have her on natural choice lg puppy breed food and she has been since i got her at 8wks this seem to be happenning only since summer or the hotter weather has come so i was thinking maybe this shampoo would help..any ideas or advise would be greatly apreciated thanks

Buddy had that skin problem last summer as well. I know exactly what you are talking about. The medication Buddy was put on for it was HELL!!! It made his pee at least every 10 minutes , rivers at a time!! I opted NOT to use it the second time he got it. What I got at that time was a medicated shampoo ( dont have the name with me now but can post it tomorrow )....it was very good but VERY expensive. I believe it was about 25 dollars a bottle. I would shampoo his sensitive areas once a week with it ( belly and around his tail) and would mix bottled water with iodine....the parts was about 1-4 pts. water and would spread that around his belly every day ( 2-3 times )....that fixed the problem that time and have not had a problem since. Now....I make certain that he is dried completely after coming inside...I clean his belly off and dry it. I think that the moisture from the ground causes this rash....I dont know if the head and shoulders has anything to do with it...I think it is more making sure he is dry....but the head and shoulders certainly keeps his skin in very good condition. Try the iodine and water. Good luck!

thank you so much i wil definitly try the iodine and water and keeping her dry as well and when you find the name of the shampoo as well i will try anything. My Male golden devoloped a hot spot earlier this year and they told me on here to use goldbond medicated powder and it worked like magic so i am a true believer of going to the source, others who have experienced what i am and getting help so thanks again and i will let you know how it worked out.. :dog9

Daisy had her first head & shoulders bath tonight. Oh my goodness !! I am WORN OUT. It lathered up really well (I diluted it), but rinsing it out was not so easy. Took forever !! I think because it's naturally oily ?? and I couldn't tell if I was getting all the soap so I just kept rinsing and rinsing. Thank god for hand held shower heads -- I'd still be in there rinsing if I didn't have one :lol

Brushing her out was easy though. She's very soft. Not entirely dry yet -- that takes about 12 hours with all her fur so not sure how fluffy she's going to be. She's not itching yet though -- that's good :)

tAXIJEFF...SO SORRY it took so long to get the name of the shampoo to you.

It is Benzol peroxide shampoo. Sometimes you need a perscription with this. It worked for Buddy. Hope it helps and again, sorry for taking so long.

Please be cautious with Head and Shoulders or any other product containing Pyrithione Zinc. This product can be dangerous if ingested! I would be very carfull where the bottle was stored and that it was rinsed off your dog really well!
Sure it's safe for humans but we don't lick our hair much!

And on a related note, this product is also made by proctor and gamble.

what proctor and gamble is doing! (http://www.uncaged.co.uk/iams.htm)

Using shampoo intended for 2 legged's is not a good idea. It may make their hair shine, it may even get rid of their dry skin, but it will only be temporary and may indeed agrivate the condition.
A dogs skin is not the same as ours and the PH balance in our shampoos is quite different for those in animal products.

Our priorities in dog grooming are not neccessarily what is best for the dog!!

Ahhh really? I have been using head and shoulders on Buddy now for quite awhile and have never had a problem. Of course, he never had a problem to begin with. Perhaps it would not be such a good idea for dogs who already have a skin condition. I have used other dog shampoos ( some were very expensive) and his fur was never as nice as it is now. Amazingly enough, his dry elbows disappeared too! :029 All dogs are different I suppose and what is good for one is not necessarily good for all. I will watch his skin regularly to be sure it isn't having a negative reaction in the future.

I'm not talking about individual dogs but all dogs. They have a different chemical make up in their skin and therefore require different shampoo. I'm sure that your dog looks absolutely lovely but the constituents of the shampoo are not good for a dog and they effects can build up. I have even heard that licking their coats after a bath in Head and Shoulders can be harmful. Is it really worth the risk just to satisfy our vanity?
Absolutely no offence intended but I am one of those people who accepts her dogs as being dogs, smells, curls natural coat grease included. A good brushing daily and feeding the correct food is the way to get your dogs coat gleaming with health.

I agree with you Touchka. My last dog never went to the groomer and I gave her a bath about twice per year with dog shampoo. When she was about 8 years old, her vet had asked me how often she got a bath. When I told him about twice per year his response was "that's perfect that's all it should be!" I am doing the same with Harley. Her coat is shiny & beautiful. If she gets dirty from a run in the mud I just wipe her down a little, let her dry off and then brush it out!

Yep, it's a sort of homely smell isn't it. Perfume is OK for Poodles but our county/sporty dogs deserve some respect.

i appreciate the advise on the head and shoulders or should i say people shampoo in general. I used the h&s once and my star seemed to itch even more. i don.t know if that has any relationship or not. I don't want my dogs to smell like perfume or am not trying to please my vanity though by BATHING THEM ONCE IN AWHILE, ABOUT ONCE EVERY 6 WEEKS I WAS TRYING TO FIND SOMETHING THAT WOULD HELP MY GIRL NOT HAVE TO ITCH SO BAD. sO YOU SEE I WAS DOING IT TO HELP HER NOT PLEASE ME. i LOVE MY DOGS CLEAN OR DIRTY BUT SINCE THEY DO HAVE THE RUN OF THE HOUSE A LITTLE BATH ONCE IN AWHILE IS NOT CONSIDERED A BAD THING AT OUR HOUSE.....:\

I'm not having a go at anyone Taxijeff, I know what its like to have a scratching dog, it drives them crazy and it drives us crazy just watching. We also would try anything to calm their skin. Having said that, if its a case of ansn allergy, shampoos don't normally fix it. My vet usually gives a jab to calm the itching caused by the long grasses and it works. Heaven knows what it is that he uses though.
Sorry if you feel I was being nasty, it really wasn't intended, but these things catch on and before you know it vast numbers of people will be using a product which is not suitable and our Golden babies have to suffer the consequences.

i agree, human shampoo is probably not a good idea. if your dog has skin problems (dry, itchy) try a good dog shampoo with tea tree oil or citrus or oatmeal. or perhaps a medicated shampoo prescribed by a vet.

also explore other reasons (assuming it is not genetic)for the skin condition - most can probably be traced to a poor diet. switch to a higher quality food and consider food supplements like linatone, flax seed etc.

good luck!

i really didn't mean to sound so offended i guess i was just frustrated with my girl and her itching. I can see your point about it catching on and the poor babies are the ones that suffer. i feed my dogs nutro i tried changing the food but it didn't change i think it is an allergy to the tall grass as we go for a hike every morning in the woods and my star always tries to keep up with her soulmate shadow and they are in grass so tall i can't see them sometimes so i guess its to the vet again we go. It just started this summmer so thats why i think its the grass or something like that. anyway i really do appreciate all the advise i get on her and doin't mean to sound harsh or offended. i love this site i have learned so much about how to take the best care of my babies, So thanks again and i am even taking your advise about not bathing them but every so often to see if that willhelp as well. i just wash them down in the morning now after there run and brush them well every day..again thanks for the help.:dogbark

I find that there is such conflicting information about the Dos and donts regarding our babies. Food...shampoos etc....I did read that there was a study done that found there was absolutely no difference in the chemical makeup of human and dog shampoos...I am not saying that this is founded...I hear this and think it is perfectly OK and then I hear here that it isn't...very confusing. I will take all of this to heart and really consider what I am using to clean Buddy. I would like to just add this though....I NEVER bath my dog to *pamper my own vanity *.....my golden hates being dirty and is much happier when he is clean. Also, I am working in a foreign country where there are many strange bugs and very polluted waters etc....I keep my Buddy clean to avoid skin problems etc....also, I don't think there is anything wrong with being proud of your dog, clean or dirty. I am not offended at all but just wanted to clarify this. Thanks for all the info on Head and Shoulders and will definitely research it more.

Hi,
My groomer uses a shampoo called -Crazy Dog Shampoo-I found it online but need to ask her where she gets it. Gus always smeels great for days and is extra soft and silky!! She has not had skin problems and doesn't seem to have any reactions to this product. I've tried different things but this seems to be the best so far.

Crazy Dog shampoos can be bought at Petsmart. My daughter loves the Pina Colada scent, so that's what we use. I even sent it to the kennel with her while we were out of town as they bathe her before she comes home. I think the other "flavors" are berry, baby powder, and something else that I can't remember. Some of the discount mail order catalogs also carry it.

I use Earthbath (Dog Shampoo) on my two goldens. They have a number of different formulas, I use the "Earthbath Shampoo Oatmeal Aloe" I have never had any problems with it, and my goldens look good. They never had any skin problems before though either.

Hey everyone!

I also don't bath my dog...not unless its necessary! I was told by the breeder actually that its not good for their skin and coat to be cleaned often with shampoos. She told me if Bailey gets dirty...take her in the bathroom hose her off with a hand held shower hose then..let her dry..brush her out..thats all thats required. Unless she gets into something really stinky...then shampoo is necessary:x

She also said that a bath maybe once or twice a year with shampoo is ok if I want to do that but she really stressed that I shouldn't make a habit of washing her with shampoo.

So her first "bath" was back in April when I first brought her home and I havent done it since. She smells awesome....looks clean and her coat is really nice.

Just figured I throw my 2 cents in here..lol:003

Take care folks!

You just know that they love smelling awful when they roll in cow dung. Our girls really grin when they're rolling. They aren't amused at all though when they get it washed off. Our old dog Ben once escaped over the road to the fields. He really covered himself in it. One enforced shampoo later, we took him for a run to dry off and I'll be darned if he didn't repeat the performance. Don't you just love them though?

Yeah, Zeke's done that a couple of times... come on folks, these dog's noses can't be as sensitive as people claim. Although, the first time Zeke rolled in dung, I put him in his crate while I went to get his shampoo. When I came back, he just gave me a look like all of a sudden he realized just how bad he smelled:lol Then he just stood there (no fussing)while I sprayed him down and lathered him up:\ Never again has he gotten himself quite so stinky.

I use the Mane & Tale shampoo & conditioner for harley. He smells great for days, and he really likes it too, and he doesnt' itch either. In fact, someone from this board used this on they're goldens and so i tried it, (when i used to post as xGolden Kissesx) and it really made his coat shinier.
