View Full Version : Golden Coat seems too short?

Hello guys & gals....
Haylee's coat seems to be short and coarse compared to a lot of the pictures I've seen on this forum. When I got her at 6 months old she had her puppy coat and was soft and fluffy. She now seems to have a shorter coarser coat. My questions is, does the adult coat take time to grow in properly. It just doesn't seem right.
I did recently change her food to Canidae (thanks to this site) and her coat is definitely showing improvements but not in length.
I actually wonder if she's not a purebred. I don't really care, but I do wonder. She was a rescue dog, so I don't have her history. Suggestions / opinions are appreciated.

Just a few things:
Do you have a picture? And how old is your dog now? Thanks.

Hi - she just turned 9 months old. I don't have a digital camera or a scanner so I can't post pics. I guess it's pretty hard for anyone to offer advice without a pic :\ . I'll see what I can do. Her build and her face and her personality all scream Golden Retriever. Her coat seemed normal until she lost her puppy fur. I am probably over-reacting.:jump2

The 3 pups I kept from our litter all have different hair. Sally has long floppy blond hair, Katie has thick, straightish hair (apart from her caorkscrew tail and Ruby has short soft hair. They are all beautiful and all fall within the breed norms. Think yourself lucky that there is less hair to collect on your carpets!!

Thank you very much for your reply. I'm a huge worry-wort and thought maybe something could be wrong.
Her coat isn't short like a Lab coat. I guess the best way to explain it is that it seems thin, not thick and flowing like I've seen. She's beautiful no matter what and you're right -- less hair in my house, car, clothes etc...
Plus, it's getting softer with the change in diet. Best decision I've made. She loves it!

Maybe your pup has some field breed in it. Our Abby has a large type frame and getting long hair at 8 months just like her momma , Our Desiree is small framed and short haired, full of pee and vinegar and looks 100 percent field bred just like her daddy. Desiree is much easier to groom and doesn't shed a bunch of dust bunnies like abby does.

My Adam, although pure Golden, has a thin fine coat, and no undercoat. I'm just glad I don't have all the fur to clean up.

Hello,
Your dog is still pretty young... She could develop more coat as she gets older.

If my Daisy is any indication, the coat of your golden will change over the course of its first couple of years. Daisy is 3-1/2 now and she has more fur than she ever has. She definitely has a different coat now than she did at 1 year.

Another thing I've noticed, there is so much variation within the breed. Not just in the length of coat and feathers, but in the color and texture too.

I have a 14mth and he has short hair (butters in the comic section) I am guessing age / and hunting type of the breed, but if anyone knows?

This is pretty funny because I asked the EXACT same questions about my Buddy when he was younger. His fur just seemed too short and he didnt look anything like a *typical* golden. He started to grow longer hair after one year of age.....now his hair is pretty long. Dont worry:)

I can totally see what you mean. No need to post a picture on my account, my Honeys coat is just as you described it. I got her under the same circumstances as you. And I also wonder about her pedigree as well.

Only difference is that I got her at best estimate at 10 months. If shes not purebred, I don't care, I've had her for 6 weeks and I love her.

Everyone flocks to my "Golden" and I don't need a piece of paper to tell me she purebred, in my heart and in her personality, she shows it....and people see it too!

Im sure glad she found me :921
