I just gave Chili a bath....he gets SO CURLY after he's been wet. I tried to put a little conditioner in his coat to help keep it more manageable, but as you can see, his hair is all over!
Any thoughts on how to make his hair a little flatter? Chili looked like he had "bed head" for a full week after his last bath!

Hello,
Maybe if you brush him a lot when he's wet? That helps Ginger's fur from going in the wrong direction a little... Another thing I've found that helps is laying a towel over her and tying it on while she dries. (of course you have to make sure the towel is keeping the hair flat and not pushing it the wrong way!)
The only thing that works 100% in my experience is using a forced air dryer to dry the dog.

Jeter's fur looks exactly like that after a bath. I have noticed that it has calmed down over the last month, maybe because his fur is getting longer. I also use conditioner he is so soft lol.

I blew Chili dry with a brush in hand.... it helped, but he's still quite curly! Maybe I'll start to call him "Annie".

Last week I took Sammy to be groomed for the first time. I thought he would look beautiful, and when I picked him up I didn't even recognize him. His body looked twice the size and his hair was sticking out in all directions. Your picure looks exactly like him, only his hair looked worse. I ended up completely wetting him and putting my daughter's conditioner on him. I brushed and brushed, but his hair still was out of control. It took a few days, but he's back to normal. I was told once their hair gets longer, it isn't as crazy looking. I was told a towel with baby pins can flatten the coat out, but Sammy wouldn't keep it on, and I'm sure it would take forever to dry. I am going in December to a woman's house who breeds and shows her dogs. She is going to show me how to groom Sammy, so if she has any methods to control the curls, I'll let you know.

Sammysmom - thanks for the input! When Chili is dried after being wet, he looks like he's gained 10 pounds! In fact, I was afraid when I posted that photo someone would say "he looks a little plump". He's really a perfect weight, but just so FLUFFY!
I guess all I can hope is that it will get better!
Also, good idea about working with the breeder/show dog owner. I've got a person like that here - I'll have to ask her what she does!

Our last golden had that same curly hair! And hers was very thick, and wiry....after bathing it would get really soft and she would look so pretty, but it didn't last long!<img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/eek.gif" />

Just wanted to add that a force dryer works MUCH better than a hair dryer with getting the hair to lie flat. I've used a hair dryer once or twice, and it didn't help much at all...

I once showed Delta in breed at a match with her hair like that. You can force-air dry them, or just wait...his hair will not be so curly after baths once he's older.

Buddy looks like as well esp. if he sleeps after...MAJOR pillow perm!!! I find ( in the summer only ) on a hot day, I will bath him and then take him outside to dry, being sure to brush him every so often during the drying process ( hahaha ..sounding so technical! hahaha :jump2 ...anyway, I find he looks fantastic after this...in the winter, I blow him dry. I posted a topic on head and shoulders shampoo....amazing shampoo for Goldens!!! I found Buddy's fur is much more managable using that. Good luck!

Whats wrong with curls? If a Goldie is supposed to be curly, let him be curly. My dogs are all becoming curlier as they get older and I love it. My Katie has straight hair but a toilet brush tail. I just love her to bits like that.

Our Champion male has a nightmare coat due to curls and waves and when he is entered fo a show it can take 2 or 3 weeks of work to prepare it to a presentable condition.
The secret in presenting this type of coat is to wash it with a specialised high quality shampoo and brush through a top-quality conditioner (in the UK we use a product manufactured by Dezyner Dog).
The next step is to lightly towel-dry the coat to remove most of the water. He is then followed around with a slicker-glove and smoothed down until the coat is nearly dry.
We then cover him in a custom-made string type coat (see the following link Dry Dog Coats (http://www.drydogcoats.co.uk/).
He sleeps in this overnight and when it is removed the coat is flat and sleek and looks superb for when he is exhibited.
We last exhibited Boysie 2 weeks ago and he looked so good that he won the Reserve Challenge Certificate from Veteran Dog at 10 years of age in an entry of over 200 male dogs.

Hi Messano, I've just taken a look at the DRYCOAT site and now I think I understand what you mean by curly. The dog who is modelling the coat really has a touch of the frizzies. Our dogs are curly but more on their sides than their backs. I guess this wavy touch is acceptable in competitions.
