From the Official Standard of the Golden Retriever (AKC):

Quote:
Coat -- Dense and water repellent with good undercoat. Outer coat firm and resilient, neither coarse nor silky, lying close to body; may be straight or wavy.

I would say that chances are your 5-month-old just happens to be closer to the breed standard in this respect.

Hunter and KayCee were littermates. I lost him last Oct. after his 3rd ProHeart6 injection. Anyway, his coat was straight and soft and fairly silky while her's is soft, yet a little more coarse, and wavy. He had a beautiful mane, and nice lenght fur on tail and back of legs, where her mane isn't so thick and long, but the hair on her tail and her legs is unreal. Their coats were entirely different, even tho they were littermates.
