upload pictures to my laptop (windows xp) without having to install the Canon software?
My laptop is Employer owned and lots of security...I am not allowed to have my Canon software installed...and got caught
Short of installing the software on my personal computer and loading my pictures that way.....is there a way I can bypass the software all together and upload my pictures using software already installed on my laptop?
I am thinking there is a way and I just don't know enough????????
Anyone? Johnwa?? Tom??
Thank you!!!
p.s......sorry, I probably entered this in the wrong forum

--Janet, when you say "upload" them...upload them from where, exactly? Also, I assume the Canon software you are talking about is the photo-editing software??? Please advise.

--Just a cautionary note: Corporate owned computers almost always come with usage policies. I'm concerned that you might be using your PC for purposes that are honorable, but contrary to corporate policy. Therefore, I would read the policy or ask first.

Johnwa, You are correct about corporate policies. They dont care about my having pictures on the laptop, etc....I am just not allowed to have my privately owned software installed. Make sense?
What I am asking is, can I connect my camera to the laptop and upload the pics without the canon software??? (upload to the laptop)

I don't think that's likely.. you usually need the corresponding software.
I've just checked with our IT director and he said he doesn't think you will be able to do it... at least he doesn't know how..
sorry :(

--Ahhh...now I understand. If memory serves me correctly, you will need only a I/O driver to communicate with your camera as a hard-drive, but you don't actually need the Canon photo editing software itself. Once a picture is uploaded to your PC in .jpg format, you can do whatever you want with it. i.e. you don't necessarily need to the Canon software to manipulate it; you can use any photo editing software from that point on. So all you need to do is plug in your camera to the PC. If the driver is installed, it should recognize it and it will display the picture files on your "My Computer" screen. Afterwhich, you can simply do a select all and then copy them to some other folder on your PC.

I know for me at work, they have such tight security, that I can not plug in anything. So what I do is download them at home, burn them to a CD, then I load them.

If all else fails......that is what I will do.

That's what I end up doing as my laptop doesn't like my computer. I take the memory card and plug it into my son's computer ( he has a card reader). Save the pics to a disk and then use the disk to load them into my laptop. I'd use his to post, but he does not have internet access on his computer yet as it has all his school programs on it and I don't want him online during the day when he's supposed to be doing his schoolwork.

what a pain this is turning out to be. I loaded the software to my personal computer. Plugged in my camera and uploaded the pics. Then I put in a disc in the D drive and tried to save the photes there....keep getting a message to insert a disc??? makes no sense.
Giving up on that, I am now creating a kodakgallery site to put my pics there....THEN I can save the pics to the laptop I hope. My personal computer is hooked up ONLY thru my land line so this is taking a realllllllly long time! Grrrrr.......

--No, it's a piece of software that allows your operating system to communicate with the device (in your case, the camera) it generally comes with the camera itself. It sounds like it's not installed on your computer, however.

Does your camera save pics to a removable card? I just put my Compact Flash card into a card reader (inexpensive at Office Max, Best Buy, etc) and then it acts like a portable drive. I can open it through "My Computer" and just select and drag pics onto my laptop.

Yes! I have a removable card. Re: the card reader...does that require you to install any software for it? (comes with a cd?)

You should be able to go to your local computer store (I.e., Fry's, CompUSA, etc) and purchase a USB memory Card Reader. Just tell the salesperson that you need an SD USB Memory Card Reader (I'm assuming your Canon uses SD Memory - You'll want to verify this) and you should be good to go. It should cost you no more than $10.
Here is one I found online (http://shop3.outpost.com/product/4939541?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG )

Just pull your memory chip out of your camera and it will say if it's "SD" right on the chip. This is what mine looks like.

That is exactly what mine looks like!! Good deal!! Thanks so much for this, you have saved me much pain and suffering. :D I am ordering that RIGHT NOW!!

You should not need the reader. If you ordered it, fine.
Just connect a USB cable to your camera and computer. The computer will recognize your camera as an external storage device. You can now download the pictures in your camera on the SD card to the directory of choice.
Should you need additional help, just post here and we will walk you through.
Good luck.

If you have a USB cable, plug it in the camera. Then plug into the USB port. You should hear a ding.....and a little window in the taskbar should pop up and say that a storage device has been found. One question? Are you using WinXP?
Janet
11-21-2006, 01:20 PM
Yes, the laptop has windows xp. The camera came with a thingie that plugs into the camera on one end and plugs into laptop. With the camera software I had installed (and had to remove), all I had to do was turn on the camera and red light on the camera alerted me to download...so I pushed the red camera light button and the software appeared on the computer and the pictures were transferred.

I am stumped.
I have had 2 Canon's and 1 Olmpy and they all showed up as a storage device when connected with UBS.
Janet

So, canon was a storage device on your computer? Geez....I wonder if I uninstalled more than I needed to? That would be my luck!
