My dog is still a pup, but her mom has short hair and all of her pups have shorter hair. How often is it necessary to groom them? Our breeder says that she has only brushed the mom's coat no more than 5 or 6 times in her life (hehe don't worry though, she is well-taken care of), and it is absolutely gorgeous. How often does anyone else groom their shorter-haired Golden?

I'd say about every other day. I know it's not necessary as far as matts are concerned but I enjoy itI take the time to look for stickers and ticks and whatever else might want to jump on for a ride. He has a very shiny and soft coat to. ;)

I run a quick brush and comb through mine everyday (takes about 2 minutes), it helps to spread the oils in their coat and keep it soft and shiny.

I comb mine every other day because I enjoy doing it but also becuase it is a sign of affection for them and a bonding time for you and your dog. Would you brush your hair just 5 or 6 times in your life?

I brush Ginger anywhere from every day to about once a week- it depends on the time of year, how busy we are, if she's going out anywhere, etc... Ginger doesn't really have short fur, but it does not tangle and is not as long as some Goldens' (and definitely a lot less dense.)

However she does get 'massaged' very often which helps stimulate the skin and remove dead coat as brushing does.
I also often got comments of "Did she just have a bath?" or similar when she actually is due for a bath!

My short haired golden get combed EVERY day.
Make sure you get in this daily habit, it only takes a couple of minutes because of the short coat. It lets your golden get used to being handled and combed, it makes them easier to bath and groom. Also with the interaction of a quick combing you will notice things like lumps, skin irregularities, and as was said above ticks and fleas quickly before they become a problem.

As soon as I take out the brush and comb, they both start fighting to be groomed first..not an easy task for me..Now I try to let one outside, then sneak out the grooming tools, VERY QUIETLY..Jewel always hears it though.
