I read somewhere that Goldens should not be bathed more often that once a month. When Dakota goes to hte woods or in the creek, my wife can't stand it and wants to bathe her more often. Any thoughts?

Hi there,

I bath my Tulsa bi-weekly and her fur is soft and her skin has no problems. My breeder told me that warm water on golden's is good for their skin and as long as you are using a mild shampoo, I think even several times a month is fine, especially if you live somehere where the dog can get into muddy or dirty area's. I know I like a clean dog and Tulsa loves the hairdryer too!

I have heard of waterless dog shampoo. But never tried it. I'm not sure if it's less drying on the dog's coat than regular shampoo. I think most pet stores carry it.
Another thought, most regular dog shampoos say on the label to dillute the shampoo when bathing the dog, not to put the concentrated shampoo directly on the dog. Maybe you could dillute it a little more than usual if your dog needs frequent baths.
I know they do get stinky after a swim.

I'm not sure if it was on this forum or not, but I read this suggested somewhere. If your dog is going to swim, you can put the shampoo and water mixture in a spray bottle and right before the dog goes in the water, spray them down with the shampoo mixture. That might do the trick for you.

Good Luck

I brush my goldies out with baby powder when they are dried off and the dirt brushes out of their coat and the powder makes them smell fresher, inbetween their normal bath times.

Because Pahou lives in the pool he absolutely STINKS lol. he gets bathed *every night* but other wise he can't come in the house. Because of the heat here Pahou has to be in the pool, it's a survival thing. We use Alpo ph7 deoderant shampoo and his skin isn't dry and his coat is nice. he's even learned to go to the outside shower room and wait for his shower so he can come inside lol.

Our dogs are show dogs and they are quite often bathed every week when they are being campaigned.

The most important thing to remember is to rinse all the shampoo out of their coats and there should be no problem.

Holly gets bathed every 3-4 weeks...sometimes more if she finds something really.....***interesting***.... to roll in.

She has a beautiful, soft coat and no matts or skin problems.

We bathe our Honey Bear once every two weeks, however during the in-between times, we use Huggies (Natural, no alcohol - too drying). When she just has to roll around in mud, we just wipe her down with a few Huggies and she's ready for another romp in the park!:lol
