I was taking Shaker out the front door on her leash (going to the vet for shots) and Berr slipped out the door with us. The dogs NEVER go out the front door except on command (and on a leash) but the people across the street had 3 bunnies in their front yard and I guess it was too much for him to resist. He raced across the street right in front of a truck--the truck hit his tail    I knew he was going to be hit.

It finally dawned on him that the woman who was screaming his name was his mom and he should probably go see what she wanted. So he wheeled around and raced back across the road in front of another car and sat down in front of me. I smacked my knee on the sidewalk lunging for his collar and threw him inside the house.

Shaker and I limped our way to the vet--Shake was a nervous wreck and I was a mess. And Berr had a training session when I got home (and of course he sat, stayed and came perfectly..... )

omg......I almost lost my teddy bear......I let him sit in my lap (all 88 pounds of him) last night.

We have some traffic on our street, but because of a detour (they're replacing storm drains) we have a lot right now. Berr is a very lucky dog.

There is another thread about dogs with a high prey drive and the thing that will be amusing in another day or so is that Berr doesn't have one. Shaker is the one with the high prey drive.... :laugh2

Wow, my heart is racing...just take a second dosen't it! I am so glad it was only his tail that got tagged!! Too Close!

I have been working with Tailer on the "Sit" till I am ready to allow him to go through a doorway...we have a boot room that is too small, only one human can be in there at a time...can't close the inside door (for that wonderful air-lock kind-a thing) with a dog in there too! I have to leave him in the kitchen till I'm dressed for the weather, then I can allow him through, then close the doors!

The Next house WILL have a boot room large enough for 2 people & a dog!!

I am so Glad You & Berr are Fine! Makes all of us re-think how we go through dorways!! Yikes! Wheeewww...

OMG! I could so see that in my mind's eye as I was reading your post! I am so glad he didn't get hurt! I would not put it past my dog to do that, as a matter of fact she has with squirrels and there was no car coming. I too have a small entry way, and my dogs have to sit in kitchen at the top of 4 small stairs until I tell them it is okay.I even go so far as to check the street before I take them out most times, but I sometimes miss a squirrel or two when I look, but the girls don't!

I've had similar things happen. It can be very scarey and I'm glad to hear that Shaker just has a sore tail to show for his adventure. (Ours happened when there was a deer in the front yard.)

When I consider the conversations about whether to leave collars on dogs while they're inside the house, I think of incidents such as this one. Even though my dogs are all microchipped, I'd never want to take the chance of having them get loose without their tags clearly visible.

I'm so glad that story had a happy ending.

It must have been a terrifying few minutes there.

It's the worst isn't it? Like watching your life pass in front of your eyes and the sheer panic and horror of it all leaves you weak in the knees. Thank goodness the outcome was what it was........ they can take us by surprise in the blink of an eye.

A similar thing happened with my year old golden Jake. My fiance had just finished walking him. As soon as Bryan got up on the porch he took Jake's leash off to let him inside. As soon as that leash came off Jake took off in the neighbors yard. Bryan went after him. For some unknown reason Jake really wanted to go across the street. Well as soon as Jake decided to cross the road a car was coming right in his path. Jake slammed his head right into the side of the car. Thank god he did not snap his neck. Jake was very scared. His nose was bleeding and he had a cut above his right eye. My fiance took him to the vet just to make sure he was truley okay. He was fine. When I got home that day I just cried as I was holding him. I could not believe that I almost lost my baby. I think Jake learned his lesson though about cars. Now when we walk him, everytime a car goes by Jake immediatley sits down and watches the car as it goes by. As soon as the car has passed Jake gets up and we resume out walk.

This happened to Daisy once. We live at the very end of dead-end street, traffic isn't ever an issue. But one day all the wrong circumstances came together in one freak moment. I thought for sure it was the end. She didn't get hit but it couldn't possibly have been any closer.

It truly is a horrible sobering moment, isn't it? Sometimes we get lucky. Sometimes.

I don't think the memory or the feeling of that moment will ever truly leave me. I am so much more careful now. I'm really not the same carefree person I was before. I know something like this CAN happen to my dog. I can't let it almost happen again .... what are the chances of being lucky twice :o

I know. I mean, the dogs never go out the front door except on a leash, and even then, they look at me and wait for the "heel".....I don't know what was going on in that blonde brain of his. I guess it was just the combination of Shaker going out and the bunnies across the street....but I'm very careful about the front door now (phobic, my son says) and I check to see that the screen door latch has caught all the way now when someone goes out.

And of course it would be Berr. He's such a blonde
