GR are shedders, and with spring not far off, Flash is shedding more than usual.

I wouldn't worry about a hairless dog!!! lol

I find that Flash sheds more twice a year, in the fall and in the spring. He does shed inbetween but not to that extent.

Happy vacuuming!

When will the shedding end? Never.

Golden's are notorious hair distributers.

Yes indeed, GR's are notorious shedders!

Some things you can do to help with this:

1). Comb out the loose hair at least on a weekly basis; use a frontward and then backward motion with the comb to get the most hair out. There are some people who do it more often then that. You will basically need to judge for yourself how often is good for you.

2). Keep a good supply of empty vacuum cleaner bags on hand.

3). Comb the dog prior to a bath. This way, your tub or basin will not get overly clogged with dog hair.

I have been brushing him daily...it does seem to help alot. I was just wondering if part of it is that he's 10 months old now and possibly getting his adult coat. His hair has gotten coarser especially on his back. His hind quarters has really thinned out alot too. What age do you think they get thier adult coat?

I'm not exactly sure...it's speculation on my vets part. I adopted him from the animal control which they told me he was 6 months old at the time....and that was in Dec. My vet told me he could have been almost 8 months old because the way his teeth looked. I guess thats how they estimate the age. Anyhow...he is between 9 and 11 months old I guess..lol! I think May is a good month for his first birthday...he can share his with mine! :lol

Rosebud, I remember when Daisy went through her first serious shed and it had to have been around 10 months, just like yours. I could not believe how much she shed. It was her puppy coat, definitely. She is always shedding, as I posted earlier, but never has she shed as much as she did around 10 months.

Our girl is shedding terrible right now, she even got a bath last night and I swear I combed out a ton more of it after I blew her dry some.

Good side is, it will ease up here soon

I will admit though, I thought it was too early for this amount of shedding up here....were still in winter here and its still very cold.

WHEN WILL THE SHEDDING END??? NEVAH!!!!!! LOL...I sweep my kitchen floor at least 5 or 6 times a day..The hair is even upstairs and they aren't even allowed up there..You should see the inside of my CAR!!!!!!! UGH..If I can get past them wearing black, it gets me when I get into the car. They seem to smell more when they are shedding too..It's too cold to bathe them now and they were groomed about 2 months ago..Thank God for Yankee Candles..I brush, comb and rake them every day..After 18 years of golden hair, I've come to the conclusion.....YOU CAN'T WIN!!!!!!!

I have to say that the shedding begins early. (Tasha is 15wks and hair is everywhere) I have heard that Goldens shed full coat in the spring and fall. Meaning they get a completely new coat. I brush every other day and vacuum frequently. One thing I have found to be quite helpful is to keep lint brushes/pet hair rollers stocked at all times. :032

Wow, I think my pup is defective.... Holly is 16 weeks and not shedding at all. I just thought that was because of her puppy coat. She is starting to look "shaggy" though.... I thought it was her "grown-up" coat coming in.

Logan has also finally stopped shedding....woohoooo!!!:029
Now when I brush him, I get very little fur compaired to the huge amount that was coming off. Is this how he will look through the summer? He doesn't have nearly the coat some of the GR's I have seen on this site. When I got him in December from the animal control,he had just been neutered. I bought the shedding blade for Beau this weekend at Petsmart. It does take out a ton of hair. Beau is 7 mos and has just now really started to shed. I suspect he is losing his puppy hair. It has been really warm here in SC mid 70's today, and not much cold weather at all, YET! and that may have something to do with it. One good thing though we are getting plenty of practice at grooming for his CGC

Hi all! When a friend saw how much our dog is shedding, she said that she knew someone who shaved their GR down every spring??????!!!!!! We live on the west coast and I have never heard of this. I'm thinking maybe my friend had GRs confused with a different breed??? Anyway, I am a newer GR-mom and I'd appreciate some responses on this. Has anyone ever heard of this? If so.....any pictures? I can't even imagine what this would look like or if it is actually done. I could never shave down my Sugar......the shedding may be a pain, but her coat is SO pretty! :054

Shaved Goldens look like mutants--they leave the tail hair on and shave the rest of their bodies--not a good look--kind of like big Chinese Creasted dogs. I have never been tempted! Plus, I read that their fur protects them from the hot sun. I guess if you shaved them you'd have to apply sunscreen... :dogbark

GoldenLady
03-03-2005, 02:46 PM
Yes, the coat actually helps to protect the skin from the sun. Since most Goldens lose their undercoat during the spring season, the dogs get the benefit of the coat (guard hairs) protecting them from the sun's rays, while still getting lots of ventilation due to the loss of undercoat.

I've also heard that when a Golden (or other double-coated breed) is shaved down, the coat sometimes doesn't grow back properly afterwards.

I have no personal experience with this matter however, as to me it seems sacreligious to remove any of that beautiful Golden fur.... :)

Last June I took my golden (12 y.o.) to the groomer to get washed, nails done and ears. I went to pick her up four hours later and after paying they brought out the wrong golden. they asked me if I was sure it wasn't my dog (like I wouldn't know her) and I explained it was not my dog. After 3 other goldens were brought out, none of them mine, they said..... uh oh. they had sent my golden home with someone else. I wondered about the family that took her home, that didn't notice it was not their dog. but when they got Sandy back from them (their's was a male and slightly aggressive, mine is a female and jumps on furniture) I understood why they would not know. they had wanted their dog shaved, and I didn't recognize my own dog shaved (all but head and tail). Poor sandy looked so sad, and knew it. She burrowed under covers to keep warm and kept hidden because she looked so pitiful. so I would never get a golden shaved.

Hi,
I was reading all the posts regarding the shedding problem. I too have a shedding blade and it does help, but the one thing that has helped tremendously was due to a post on this forum. Someone a while back had posted a suggestion to use Lipiderm to help with shedding. I bought a bottle of the liquid and put 1 tsp of it in with Katie's Canidae every day. The difference in her was amazing! Within a couple of weeks I noticed a remarkable decrease in shedding and her coat has the most brilliant shine. Lipiderm contains fish oils with both Omega 3 and Omega 6 so it conditions the skin and hair. It really has made a difference for me! You can get it at better dog supply stores or on the Internet. A large bottle --I think it is like 20 oz or something like that-- is about $18 and well worth it.

Make sure to use the sheding blade outdoors though, because unlike a brush, the hair does not accumulate in it for you to clean out, with this the fur flies everywhere. It does do a good job though.

Oh my gosh....and yes, I completely understand about the unwanted shaving as it was done to my Sheltie mix, Finny. Oh...I went ballistic. However, to have sent your dog home with someone else??? Oh...oh..I am beyond words. I suppose that happens but I know me and I'd get my Irish up. I have an attorney son and boy I would be all over those people. Wouldn't matter if there was a settlement. $$ isn't the issue...I'd just make their life miserable with litigation. Oh, now I'm mad all over again thinking about my "old" groomers shaving my Finny. I think I've mentioned here before that I've found the perfect groomer. (well, unless you do it yourself) I have a "boutique" groomer. I swear it is so wonderful. They don't even own a kennel inside the shop - excuse me, "salon". ;) ;) It's like a hair appointment. In and out. One dog at a time. In fact, Kinsey was just there 3 days ago. I dropped her off at 2pm and asked when I should be there to pick her up. 2:45pm. I'm serious. 45 minutes and she looked great.

As for this shedding comb thingy - I must look into that. Shedding and Goldens just are joined at the hip although I do brush/comb Kinsey almost daily and that really helps alot.
As for whoever is thinking of shaving their Golden....I think it's against the law to shave a Golden Retriever. I'm pretty sure the Feds will find you!! There's no death penalty but it's hard time....a spoon and a big hard rock to chip away at. And, of course, all of us here will be looking for you and there's no Witness Protection Program for shaving a Golden!! rofl3

About 6 months ago I found this product/procedure called "furminator" (its a solution and brushing tool). I also found a groomer (1 1/2 hours away) that does it. I am really happy we did. Sammy's shedding is down at least 70 % if not more. Then about 2 months ago I adopted a himalayan, and then again a lot of shedding. Well 2 weeks ago I brought Sammy back to have a bath and furminated, I also brought Ellie (cat) and it works great on both. I brush Sammy 3 times a week and there is nothing near how it was before. As far as Ellie goes, I brush her everyday because she has longer hair, and to make sure there are no snarls. What a big difference. I really can wear dark colors again. I am not saying there is no hair, but now I only have to pick off a few here and there instead of my clothes fully covered. You can purchase the tool or find a groomer that does it.

I have had a golden most of the last twenty two years. Your house should ALWAYS match your dogs coat 'cause it will anyway.....My last golden didn't shed very much at all after we found that he had a thyroid problem and treated it with medication. But the very best thing I have ever found is while the dog is in the tub and all lathered up with shampoo brush him then, (I use a comb with three rows of plastic bristels it is a humans comb) I currently have a blk lab/german shepard and she sheds more than any golden I ever met. This works so well and you can control where the hair is flying. I still have to let the bathroom dry out a bit and go in and vacuum the whole room walls and all but the shedding isn't nearly as bad after the bath as it was. Good luck. :reddogx

Here is my "snake oil formula", that I have got from a golden owner in Germany:

Given weekly:
- 1/2 lb of plain yoghurt
- 3 table spoons of olive oil
- 1 raw egg

Just throw it together. My Tetsu loves to lap this up. No guarantee, that it helps to reduce the shedding, but I feel, that it works somewhat. Anyway: Still no place in my life without blonde hair :)

I sometimes wonder why Buddy isnt bald with the amount of hair I have in my house! I brush him everyday, sometimes twice and this reduced the amt. very much. I have to say though, call me crazy, the hair has never really bothered me. I guess this comes from always having pets since I was a child and having pet hair all around was just part of life. I remember when I was young this snooty aunt of mine would come to visit and would get her nose up at all the hair around. I remember one time she wouldn't sit down because the chairs had hair on them so when noone was looking ( except for snooty aunt) I let my dog lick off my dinner plate then kissed him on the lips..dont think she ever came back come to think of it. my jaeger, has never had a shedding soiree, like my goodwin is having, right now... OMG.... I could brush him twice a day, and he'd still be coming up fur. it all depends on the dog, genetics, to be sure.. stock up on swiffer pads, (not the wet ones, toxic to pets) and vacuum bags, and lint rollers. I have one in my car, all the time too.. they're a package deal.. and Im more than willing to deal with alittle ALOT of hair..

Sounds like my groomer! I don't know if it's a "boutique" but it is a small grooming shop and they also take one dog at a time (although sometimes there's another dog waiting for the owner to pick them up...) My groomer LOVES Ginger and she knows exactly what I want her to do with her grooming and she always looks wonderful afterwards. She knows me pretty well now and sometimes I just stay with her while she grooms Ginger and she lets me wash my terrier myself in her tub and doesn't charge me for it! She's really great with dogs too, even if they act up (not that Ginger ever does!) she is SO patient with them and gentle.

First and foremost I am not scared of the shedding at all. I have an 8 year old shepard mix (Artica, all white) who sheds all year long, and let something as simple at the battery go dead in the smoke alarm, and she sheds a new coat.

Jasmine is nearly 7 months old and I have not really seen any shedding from her. I brush her daily with I guess its called a slicker and while it has some hair come up gently in it it's never much. And I haven't really seen any of her hair on the furniture, carpets or clothes.

Perhaps I am blind to it since Artica leaves major fur trails and her hair is all white so it really stands out. Or is Jamine really too young to be doing much shedding at all yet? I do expect it to happen, especially as she gets older but I guess I was really expecting more shedding at this stage as well. I can also tell where her adult coat is replacing her baby coat, (I'm sure going to miss that softness!)

I know this is a late reply but wanted to ask a question about shedding. This spring I was very surprised that Sam was hardly shedding at all, you could pet him with hardly a hair on your hand and it took a lot of brushing to fill up his brush with hair...However in the last 2 weeks the shedding has really begun. Isn't this late? It is mid summer now. I was wondering if it is because we have had a heat spell with record highs up in the upper 90's and low 100's. He has been inside almost all the time because of this. I am handling the shedding ok. I was expecting it so no big deal. We just brush a lot and I gave him a bath with the hose outside in the middle of a hot day the other day and he liked it I think. I think it actually made him shed more though.
Oh well. He actually is looking nicer as his fur was so very thick and now it looks softer and thinner. He has a very dense and thick coat. The backs of his front legs at the elbow look like pom poms. :D

Ok that is all just wondered if it is normal to start shedding this time of year.

mtee1958
07-21-2005, 01:36 PM
Bailey is shedding like crazy. I assumed the heat we are having is causing it. I'm pulling it off in clumps! He should be bald by now! I remember doing this to my last GR - she'd be sitting there minding her own business and then I'd come over and start pulling hair. Bailey moves around alot when being brushed, but he doesn't mind me picking at him. I feel like some wild animal grooming her kids!! I keep thinking I'm going to get to the end, but the next day there's more. He's even got a ridge on one side -- it's like he's molting and you can see the boundary between the part that has shed already and the part that still has all the white fur underneath!

Snowball
07-24-2005, 08:36 PM
Both of our dogs have been shedding like crazy the last couple of weeks too. They never used to shed like this so late in the summer, and our golden has never shed this much. At first it was only our golden and I wondered if it was normal, but now that both are, I assume it is the extreme heat we are having. I take brush loads out every day and also gave them both a bath the other day to get more out.

Bailey seems to have stopped his shedding, for the most part - but now I'm worried that all that gorgeous undercoat won't come back. He's got a thin coat now -- gosh his hips look so narrow without all the heavy white (there's some white fur - but it's thin). Will this come back come fall and the colder weather? Or will Bailey's adult coat (he's 1 yr.old) be a thin one? His parents were fairly furry - Dad for sure was.

I am not sure how much $ people are paying for the Shedding Blade, but an alternative tool that works well for me is a hand-held pruner from Walmart for $7. It is a 9inch blade used for cutting tree branches. I comb the hair at an angle where I won't cut her. It removes tons of hair, works better than any dog brushes out there in the market.

Hello...Denali is 17 months old and I have noticed lately that he is shedding more than usual. In fact, I just found 2 big clumps of fur on his bed that weren't there this morning. Is it normal for him to shed right before winter? I know that goldens shed A LOT, but this seemed like an unusual time to LOSE fur. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

BTW, he is on Nutro Large Breed Adult...since we switched, his coat is shiny, soft and no itchy skin. So I am not sure that diet has anything to do with it.

Thanks in advance!

Daisy is 7 months old and the last few weeks she has been shedding sooo much!!!!Its everywhere.... I have never had a golden before, but have heard they shed most 2 times a year. Is she getting her winter coat and thats why, or is it bc she is getting her full coat in general? I also bought a shed blade that works kind of good. I also was told at Pet supplies plus of some vitamins that will eliminate shedding, I wasnt sure if they were to safe and was planning on calling the vet to see what he would recommend, any ideas? Thanks!! :dogbark

She's probably shedding her puppy coat!

Eliminate shedding? No way, don't believe it. Goldens shed generally year around but more just before winter and just after winter, and most of all just before their first year when they shed their puppy coat.

Shedding is a natural process, like trees losing leaves ... there's no vitamin in the world that's going to change that.

That's about what I've found too: year-round shedding that gets worse twice a year.

That's why you'll see other discussions about vacuum cleaners, and people who have permanently given up wearing dark clothing. :laugh2 I also avoid wearing fleece because I can't seem to get the hair off fabric even when I wash it.

It says you do, however, I bathed him after, to make sure all the loose hair was gone. :)

Hey guys,

Wow! I just had to check out "The Furminator." I went to their website and watched the "Dog Demonstration Video." I actually got a little chuckle watching it because of the TREMENDOUS amount of hair that it took out! :029 :029 WOW! I currently have a regular shedding blade... but if the Furminator works like it shows in the video....then BOY am I using the wrong tool. I'll try to attach the link.....WOW! Thanks for the suggestion guys! :604 :604

I have been considering the furminator for a while myself. labrown16 mentioned buying one and using it with goos results, but in a post near the beginning of this thread someone talks about going to a groomer for this procedure but they mention a product to be used with the furminator. The furminator I saw in Dog Fancy didn't show any chemical or other product with it and it was about 39.00. is there more than just one of these furminator things? :woofpup

I did a search on the internet and bought my Furminator for $25 on the QVC website. :)

We had a Keeshound for almost 14 years that blew her coat twice a year so a Goldens coat is nothing compared to puff balls scoot cross the floor. I do miss her "non dog smell" and find myself putting dry puppy shampoo on Roos cause he smells like a dog LOL

The worst coat ever is our short haired Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dog, she has a short beautiful coat that STICKS like burs in your clothing and when scared they let off this musty horrid smell that will make you gag. (to protect them from predators in the wild I am sure)

Alright....I know Goldens shed all year round with a couple of really heavy duty sessions in spring and fall...and I really don't care...grew up with GSDs who also shed like crazy....but...

Tucker's been shedding like crazy the past couple of weeks! It's December! In New Hampshire! I just don't get it...anybody else in colder climes with me or is Tucker just whacked?

Angela and Tucker (who has donated enough fur recently for me to knit a sweater if I was so inclined.... :p )

I'm in southern CT and our 7 1/2 month old, Lucy, is also shedding like never before. Vacuuming once a day doesn't even seem like enough. You can grab a tuft of hair every time, guaranteed!

Being a new GR owner, I'm not sure if (a) she's getting her adult coat, (b) it's due to hormonal changes after being spayed, or (c) she's "blowing her coat" which seems a little late to me, being January now.

Absolutely -- yes, here in Pennsylvania ... I have no idea what is up, I thought my dog was just whacko or maybe I forgot how much she shed last winter ??? Unbelievable, it's like she started shedding during the summer and hasn't stopped!!! Why she has any hair at all, I just don't know.

And it truly is everywhere. It floats in the air. I found one in my salad last night

As much as I feel your guys' pain....

I'm so glad I'm not alone! :p I feel like we're vacuuming twice a day! Took him for a bath yesterday and I'm hoping that helps some....

JoEllen, I'm surprised Tuckers' not bald too!

Okay, I hope that Furminator works! I just bought one (the medium size), plus the shampoo and the other forumula. Let's just say, that our shedding is OUT OF CONTROL! The breeder babysat him while we went on our Christmas vacation and she was shocked at the amount of shedding our pup does. He is 14 months old, and as much hair as we have removed, theoretically, he should be bald!

I thought it was normal until our breeder pointed out that it was on the extreme side.

I had the furminator sent 2 day shipping...we'll see!

Hey FlyPhrogs, Where did you find the furminator shampoo? I looked at their web site and saw a list of places to buy the tool but nothing was mentioned about where to get the other things. I also checked QVC they have the tool but thats all. Thanks :woofpup

Did you get the furminator? Did it work? I checked back to see if you had posted anything but you didn't. Please tell me it works so well that you have gone into the grooming biz !!!
