My friend goes fishing for walleye in the winter. I asked him when he catches walleye to please cut off the head and save it for Daisy -- sorry to be so gross :D

Sandra -- is walleye head okay for dogs? I know mackeral is but Daisy's never had walleye before.

Jo Ellen--what is a walleye?

Wow, that's big catch, Jo Ellen! :029

We don't have Walleyes here, so I searched the Internet for information.
There are fresh water Walleyes and salt water Walleyes.
I think this Walleye is a salt water fish. When I look at the finn and gills of this fish, it seems to be very sharp. Just like the Salmontrout we have here. I do not give these kind of heads.

But here are other types of Walleyes without those sharp finns. Do not know if the fish pictures are fresh water fish, but that is no problem while not given regularly. Just freeze the head for 10 days before giving it.

You sure know what to do to improve Daisy's recovering. :D :D

These are fresh water walleye, we're inland. I'll have to check out the head parts to see if there's anything sharp....yummm, inspecting fish heads, oh joy !! :p

Molly, walleye is considered great eating fish in these parts. I've never had it myself.

No problem freezing it for 10 days, it's already been in my friend's freezer for that long.

This is going to be interesting. I only give her raw food outside but she has to be on a leash still so that means I have to be right there with her. Might as well get pictures for y'all, while I'm at it huh? :laugh2

The gills on walleye are pretty sharp. I would not give them to any of my goldens.

But, if you cut off the gills............very easy and fast...I think the head would be great for your pups.

I'll just have my friend remove the gills, just to be safe.

Thanks, dssxxxx !!

Well, that was interesting !!

The walleye head was definitely very hard and boney, not just the gills but the entire head !! So I got it out of the frig to give to Daisy for dinner, not realizing this and then it was like, well great, now what? Daisy's drooling and pleading ... so I decided what else could I do but filet the head !!! :laugh2 Took awhile, and it really was QUITE gross, but she got the best parts, even the eyes.

Ewwwwww. That's all I have to say about that !!

You fileted the head and you didn't take pictures? Now I've got this ridiculous image of you serving Daisy a platter of fishhead sushi ... "Good Girl Daisy, eat the little fish eyes..."

You definitely get the mom of the year award. :)

rofl3 Great story Jo Ellen, wrestling with a fish head, that certainly needs guts!
Are you sure this fish head is too hard for your Daisy?
It looks like Salmon Head and my boys do not have any problems with those.

No I'm not sure, Sandra. But it made me nervous so I decided not to give it to her whole. It even had teeth! And a spine, if you can believe that. The whole time I was fighting with it, I kept thinking to myself that she probably would do just fine with it .... but something kept telling me no. I decided to listen to myself. Just in case.

It wasn't at all like the soft fish she catches at the lake, or like the whole mackeral she gets sometimes.

Very good, always listen to yourself, Jo Ellen.
Hard to judge from a distance. It's a fish that does not live here, so I cannot comfort you with that.
Salmon has teeth, but no spine, absolutely not. It's hard, but even small dogs can beat the battle with a Salmon head.
