:204 I feel stupid asking this, but...here goes...
Do I need to peel & core apples for Murph? I heard somone talking at work today saying they give their dogs whole apples- peel, core and all. Just tosses it to them.
I want to give Murphy apples more often, b/c I read here it may help with the "yellow grass" problem. Right now, I peel & cut them up.

to the dogs. Peeled apples are fine in moderation as snacks etc but not the core of the apple. And NEVER give your dog grapes or raisins. They're toxic to our dogs.

I gave whole peeled & cored apples stuffed with peanut butter or dog food before I left the house. It made my departure a joy for my dog as he anticipated this treat or some other tastey treat each day. It also kept him busy for a few minutes while I drove away.

I also used stuffed cored pears too.

Great idea, especially for me! I stuff Murphs kong EVERY morning for the same reason, the goodbye is alot smoother, and gives him something to do for a while.
I can't wait to stuff an apple or pear. He'll go nuts :ddog
Thank you for the help...and no, no raisins or grapes.

I've read in several places that you should never give your dog the core of the apple. I'm not sure if it's the seeds, or that inner shell, but it's considered to be very bad for them (the rest of the apple is okay).

Also, I've read that you shouldn't give them pears.

The apple seeds & pip are the forbidden part of the apple as they contain cyanide. I have always peeled & cored an apple so it could be stuffed.
As far as pears, my dogs both love one peeled, cored, & stuffed. They are fine once in a while. The Balsam Pear is the poison one. If your dog has loose stools, go easy on the fruit though.
A good website for poisonous items is http://www.baywood-pets.co.uk/information3.html

CaynCher- Thanks for the link :) I was  to see green beans on the list. I have always been told that greenbeans were a good diet supplement! I have tried to give Sundance them on several occasions, Thank Goodness Sundance hates them and won't touch them! Whew!! :laugh2

Wow, that was a great link. I will be posting it in the kitchen for the whole family. I too was surprised about green beans. We have fed both green beans and cooked potatoes, I think he even had a small amount of tomato one day. Maybe I read it wrong- about the potato- I'm going back in to print it out anyway.
Thank you CaynCher, as always, very important & helpful info :)

The green beans are "ok" to feed. They are undigestable when whole or in large pieces. Raw probably wouldn't be a good idea either. I cook them & cut them up to mix in a meal. I never feed corn to my Goldens, but I was surprised that it was not on the list as it will come out undigested in the stools.

I am surprised to see much items on this list that are OK to feed in the raw meat diet. :D

We always give our dogs green beans, not because of the nutritional value, but so that they will feel like they are eating a lot. They love the green beans.

Just wanted to thank CaynCher for the stuffed apple suggestion- Murphy sends you a big :hug1 !
Today is our one year celebration with Murph! Thought I would share a couple photos of his first day home, and of today, one year later, enjoying his favorite treat on this special day...

I think the pips in apples and most of that information on the site is useful... but you have to take into consideration the quantity in which you give it to the dogs. Quantity is an integral part in any diet for any species.

Steel goes crazy for squash. He lurves his squash with a bit of sour cream in his dinner.
